Grey or wood kitchen worktop? Cannot decide!!
I'm in the process of buying a house with a green laminate kitchen worktop and white units. I intend to replace the worktop. The thing is, I love both grey and wood equally with white and really can't decide which one to go for. I'm aware that wood takes more looking after but that shouldn't be a problem for me [I may even go for a decent quality wood effect in the end if I do decide on wood over grey].
I was totally convinced on grey a few days ago but as the kitchen floor tiles are in grey I began to wonder whether it may be too stark and that if I went for wood that would bring some warmth into the room.
A pic is attached for ref - sorry that it's rather grainy. I know it's mainly down to personal preference but I'm really having a true dilemma with this decision!!
Any ideas/thoughts/comments/suggestions gratefully received !

Comments (6)I think you've been given bad advice by the wood staining company. I have a wooden worktop in one of my rentals, so, I need to make that look good every time someone new moves in. It's a standard wood block worktop. It used to be a pale to mid tone colour. I decided that it would look a little more contemporary to go dark to match new flooring that I put in. I washed it down with meths to start with to remove as much of the old stain as possible and then let it dry for a couple of days. I then sanded it back down ( not easy around the sink, but do'able ). I then put on a new dark stain and oil, Osmo tint ( Terra ). Sorted and looks great. It was originally this colour, then faded due to the glass roof:- This is it sanded back, re-tiled and prepped:- As you see it's much lighter. It then got stained and oiled twice:- I must confess, that Mrs Math did the brunt of that project, she did all the tiling and stain / oil, I just did a bit of sanding one day and then went off to another job. Comments (12)Hello, I think solid wood worktops look stunning. I had them in my old house and for the 2 years I was there I did not have to re-oil them at all because I looked after them well. I did not put anything hot straight on to them and I made sure all water and splash marks were wiped down straight away. One good thing about wooden tops is that if you do mark them you know it will come out by sanding and re-oiling them. You already know that wooden worktops are not as practical as quartz but they do bring warmth to an interior and look really striking when paired with the right colours. If this is what you have your heart set on then go for it but I would advise taking extra care with having children. You may decide that you want to have a quartz top in the areas where you have got your sink and hob and then keep the wooden tops to an area you do not use so much. I use wooden overhangs a lot in my designs where I have got casual seating such as on an island or breakfast bar. Comments (2)Cashmere is a difficult colour to compliment. Different suppliers cashmere presents itself in slightly different shades. The cashmere we sell has a pink undertone depending on the light. I cannot recall a lilac/grey tinge worktop in any of the brands we sell. We do sell some 3m long but you may have to buy 3.6m or even 4m as all lengths are available and you do have to allow for waste. What about a complete contrast?...See More

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI love grey and white together too, but agree that there needs to be some pops of colour to bring some excitement. Wood is awesome, but maintenance is not ideal. We have just fitted off white cupboards, with grey tiles and grey work surface in the kitchen. We also fitted wood work surface in the utility but the doors were farrow and ball bone. Sorry about the mess, this end of the house not quite finished!

8 years agoThis is a shot of the kitchen before moving day so there are no "pops" yet. This has 80x80 tiles, and amonite colour over the walls and the ceiling, we had to be quite careful as the other end of the kitchen is all exposed brick so didnt want to introduce too many variants. We are going for jazzy bar stools which will introduce the colour.

Personally I would go for the wood definitely and the real McCoy.... it's a beautiful material, natural, warm and inviting.. Have a look at this for some inspiration... It's fantastic! : ))
Here's another with bamboo which is equally warm and inviting..

8 years agoWe opted for grey granite work tops, Thailand Leather. I know I would not have treated wood the way it should be treated. We love our kitchen!
