Hallway, Landing & Stairs - Help, please
Hi - I'm new here, so, I apologise if I am doing this wrong. We are going to be decorating our hallway, landing & stairs soon, and, well, I was looking to do something a bit different, but, I am facing opposition from my step-son (who doesn't live here, btw). My idea was to paint the bannister and the stair wall, one colour, and all the other walls a complimentary colour - for exp, brown for the stairway walls & cream for the rest. My stepson says he has never seen it done like that before, and therefore, it will look 'stupid'. Part of me thinks, 'You don't have to live here, so, we can do what we like', but, on the other hand, I am worried that he is 'right'? We can't afford to get it redone, if it does look 'stupid', so, I really would appreciate some advice. This is a picture of the area, with sample colours 'snipped' on top - we will be getting lining/backing paper put up on the walls before they are painted. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

8 years agoHi Sue. You can create a feature ŵall out of the stair ŵall with paint or wallpaper.
I would just think about the colours used. If you went for a warm brown on that ŵall it could bring that ŵall in? The paper looks nice. Have you thought of leaving the paper and painting elsewhere? Or putting up a new wallpaper. If you show other pics without the paint there may also be suggestions for painting the stairs for example. These can look good in darker shades for example

8 years agoThank you for your ideas, minnie - I wish we could keep the wallpaper, as it is (or was) nice. Unfortunately, it is very 'tired' and looks dirty. We are definitely getting a carpet for the stairs, and unfortunately, we can't afford to put new wallpaper up, at the moment - we have enough magnolia paint (donated to us) to do the whole area, but I wanted to add a touch of soft colour to it. The carpet we are getting is very similar to the photo I have attached. As you have suggested, I have also attached a couple of photos of the hallway without the paint. Thank you again :D

Comments (18)After living with beige neutrals for about 10 years I revamped my stairs and hallway early this year with lavender walls and the brightest white gloss I could find. Mine is not the biggest space so I took out the pendant light and had recessed spot lights installed. Finished off with a silver grey carpet, although I confess this went completely against everything my friends told me....."dark carpet on stairs!". It looks fab, light and clean, although I am now a strictly no shoes upstairs freak. The floor downstairs is a parquet type flooring in a pale oak colour. I have dark oak in the kitchen and am pleased that I went with the paler oak for the hallway. I finished it off with a white blind at the top of the stairs where the only window is and the space which doubles up as an office. The first picture is taken at night with the spots on and it shines different in the daylight. Comments (2)Hi, More information is needed for us to help you out. Pictures are vital, also tell us about the lighting situation - Is it a bright, well lit hallway or is it dark and dingy? Are the stairs carpeted? Is there a bannister? Are the stairs of a more victorian style? Comments (3)I agree the grey-green colour is lovely, and it's quite restful so I don't think it would be too much if you wanted to do the whole lot in that colour. Also it would go very nicely with the parquet. However if you want to break it up, you could consider installing a dado rail and have colour under the dado and white/neutral above, or vice versa. You could even install panelling up to dado height. I don't know whether panelling or dado rails are strictly authentic for 1930s, you would have to check that, but I think it would look ok even if not authentic, as long as the style is simple. One more thought, are you going to carpet the stairs? (They look lovely bare but will be very noisy I imagine). If so I would advise choosing carpet first and then paint to go with the carpet - much easier than trying to match carpet to paint!...See MoreSue Derrick
8 years agoI have about 2.5 litres of Dulux Sandstone - I think this may do the trick instead of the darker brown? (sorry to keep posting - as we can't do this ourselves, we have to pay someone to do it, so, we really would like to do it right first time)

8 years agoUpdate for anyone who's interested, lol. I got my way, & we have Sandstone on the wall going up the stairs, magnolia everywhere else (I know, but it was free). Just need the new carpet to be put down and (my personal favourite part) go out and buy a couple of pictures to put up on the wall), but, this is what has been done so far xx
