Need help with narrow L shaped stairs

I have moved into a 1st floor retirement which has its own front door. The stairs are L shaped but are narrow at just 81 cm with walls on both sides. (No windows possible) The height from half landing up to ceiling is 350cm. I am going to put a hanging light over the half landing to make it more interesting and brighter but I need help with the decor of the walls. I think breaking the walls in two with a modern rail would help but wallpaper would get a lot of rubbing as people come up the stairs. What would you suggest?

Is your 1st floor home the top floor of the building?
We often face this kind of enquiry about lighting the stairs when windows aren't physically possible.

Hi there, I'd add an L shaped sofa on the right hand wall of the lounge area. This will allow for either a wall mounted TV or a TV unit on the wall adjacent to the stairs. Putting furniture in the opening on the right will close this room off and make it seem smaller. You want to use the whole 18ft to make sure that it feels like a large open room. I'd then put a sideboard with a mirror above it and possibly some lamps on the right hand wall. You can use the sideboard to store your little one's toys. Also consider an ottoman with storage too in front of the sofa. I always try to squirrel as much storage as I can without taking up additional valuable space. Your feature wall could then be on the right hand wall with some artwork on it. Think about practical materials. A soft leather sofa works well because it's very forgiving with sticky hands. You want the space to look great, but it has to work for your young family. Hope that helps.

The plans are being made as we speak, but I can give you a basic idea. The dinning table is 6 feet long. I have not added any windows/ bi-fold doors depending on the kitchen layout. Hope this helps. Red-pink lines are going to be doors.

Hello Louise, There's several ways you can add to existing arrangements with either choosing a wall or a section to paint a green colour.. Or add colour and wall coverings. Some fantastic green papers around. Complimenting an idea in one space by the introduction of something similar but not exact, is my preferred way of providing continuity.. You reference rather than copy.. Consider things like a tiled panel or splash back in fantastic green tiles.. Green blinds or a linen colour with green border. Perhaps you could introduce soft furnishings and yes green plant material is always good.. It doesn't need to be flowers it could be large leaves in fabulous ceramic ware.. Consider art too like canvases.. If you didn't want to paint any walls or add wallpaper, large oversized canvases or an arrangement of smaller one's in the colour you desire can give you the colour and texture without a complete transformation.. Here's some leafy inspiration for the walls... :)) This one is a personal favourite... This one too... I love it!
