kitchen layout isn't working - please help!!

Here's the room I'm working with -work in progress! I'm hoping for a gloss white kitchen look with cabinets and a dark worktop. The Kitchen designer produced a design (attached below). Unfortunately the look really didn't float my boat but I'm not sure why. It just doesn't seem to flow or look interesting. Can I please have some suggestions on what to do? How i should move things around, any suggestions what i could do. The cabinet design hasn't been finalised, I'm torn between having cabinets with integrated handles (so no handles on outside) and those with actual handles. I really like the elongated cabinets look (attached houzz photo) but need to explore how much extra these cabinets might cost, and whether it would look good with the number of cabinets i'm going for, as budget is limited. Grateful for opinions from the community. I'm thinking of maybe even changing the worktop if it'll improve the look. Thanks in advance!

Comments (13)Whilst I understand the constraints of budget I think you are approaching the planning wrong. I think the way to do this is to decide on the layout that works best and then work out what you can afford to do now- perhaps you can make economies on purchases such as the kitchen cabinets to get a better Gliw in your home. An architectural designer or a concept planner are worth considering to help with this- they would also help you visualise the finished space too. If this were my house I would be thinking the entrance wasn’t big enough for the size of house and I would be concerned about privacy of the bedrooms at the front, I also don’t like the current kitchen being some distance from a window and being a heavy traffic area. Although I can’t see the layout properly I think I have got the sizes about right to show how I would do it. I have moved the front door to the middle of the house, shown a vaulted hall with stairs to two big upstairs spaces, shown the living space as completely open plan but with the option of using one of the downstairs bedrooms or one of the upstairs rooms as an extra living room. In my opinion there are often houses with long narrow extensions across the back that should have been better considered as invariably people need bigger spaces rather than more small rooms and retrospectively opening up the original house into this space is more difficult that building in the steels originally. So my plan doesn’t change any of the external walls of the original property but a couple of internal brick walls have been removed. Comments (28)Thanks for your advice both of you. We live in England to answer your question Gabby. Is there a rule in Scotland that the aisles have to be 120cm and if so why ? Jonathan, I was kind of thinking we would want to use the island for eating meals on like we do now with our current kitchen table, but I guess if the DR is open to the kitchen then it wouldn't be a problem to take a few steps more to the dining room table (because we use it so infrequently at the moment I am finding that hard to visualise). I am going to post a better plan of our current kitchen and dining room (with the pantry taken out) and I am also going to post a photo looking out from the window in our dining room. I am wondering if we did turn the DR into our kitchen could we make the window ledge higher and put the units in an L-shape so we could put the sink in the window? (and still have space for an island) I know this goes against some of my earlier points, especially about being worried people would be able to look in at us/and would create a more goldfish bowl feeling but I am just playing around with ideas....See MoreLayout help for kitchen/lounge/diner. Comments (4)I think shortening the lounge is a great idea. Could the new kitchen door go through the cupboard in the hall next to the shower room? This would make the new wall nicely balanced with the window in the new dining room. 8 years agoHi There, I agree with all of the comments that have gone before me. Unfortunately the look of the kitchen that you have chosen to replicate is a very expensive look. Firstly totally agree with the comment re the fridge and the washing machine, if there was room in the budget for these to be integrated then I think it would make a big difference. The wall units in the Houzz picture are tilting, I have just fitted these at home, they are awesome but they aren't cheap- again if there is money in the budget then I would go for them but they are probably double the cost of a normal door. We have been fitting a lot of Kulman kitchens in our properties recently, they are German, a great quality and more importantly they are good value, they do a good range of handless and nice colours to match. Im not sure where you are based- we always use a local independent supplier but I am lead to believe that Costco are now selling Kullman kitchens so not sure if you could get to one of those or find a local retailer. As to the finish, this is as ever down to personal taste, we tend to stay away from gloss as it is quite specific however it is still as popular as ever.
