stair flooring advice
The top step/landing will need to have carpet as the step is a bit of a mess and will need covering.
Any advice welcomed!

Comments (1)Ditto! Lol. Carpet is much quieter and safer (I've slid down my previous 'all wooden' steps before now!) but I hate it too. If you have good treads, I'd go for a stylish runner which looks nicer. Comments (11)Hi Claire, what is the floor construction on the floor is it joists? there are different options and I have many years experience of dealing with these types of projects. If you are not sure then take up a section and check whats underneath the floorboards. I haven't checked on the plan yet with regard to sqm of area, however I would be wary of electric underfloor heating as the running costs are extremely high unless you have solar panels. 8 years agoWhat sort of bannister and rails are you going for? I notice you have a modern radiator and nice grey tiles in the bathroom area? I'd say therefore that probably rubbing down the outer edges and repainting them is going to go with your modern theme and then have a dark grey fleck carpet runner. I think you'll need to carpet the whole of the landing area the other couple of stairs up as the boards are not in good enough condition for just a runner, plus it's quite narrow. Also you'd have a problem with the door bar that you need to protect the edges of your tiles in the bathroom if you don't go with carpeting up to the edge fully. A completely plain carpet will show every tiny bit of stuff up so go for something with texture to it! Maybe even a subtle stripe to match the vertical lines of stair rails and the radiator.

You could create a really contemporary effect by cladding it with plank and a matching square edged nosing - see photo below.
You only need about 7sqm of wood and some nosing's, which doesn't end up costing so much.
But you could only do this if you are having wood either on the landing or in the hall - it doesn't look nice to have too many floor covering's meeting each other, looks a bit like a patchwork.
