not sure if i like the basic straight edges of walls to ceilings - should i put up a simple coving

depends on the size of the room and the height of the ceilings. Have you considered putting 12" or 18" cabinets up there to store off-season items? Or if your son has anything he collects, perhaps a collectors shelve where he can display his things?

It is a lovely room but as you have chosen black and white monochrome, you need to get a bold or big/ item in black into the upper part of the room - ie: like a beautiful bold/sculptural black monochrome reading lamp/light for example. And also think about a couple of beautiful grey decorative cushions (monochrome) for the bed. And a beautiful small white sheepskin rug for the black floor, to add the look of more comfort. I would put the mirror above the dressing table instead of above the bed. And find a large interesting black and white art-deco photograph or print to put above the bed. I think a few art-deco style things like the photo/print, a lamp and a sheep skin rug and cushions will look stunning - choose them wisely. And stick to mono-chrome colours which you have already chosen as colour-scheme. That will really bring the room together and make it look fabulous. Good luck and please show us the results afterwards. And one last thing I think a different luxurient headboard to your bed in the art-deco monochrome style is a must.

Hi, Sara, I am a huge believer in cornicing; I do think it tops a room beautifully and makes everything look finished. 2.2m is quite a low ceiling, however; so you would need to be careful not to drag it down further, and note that anything installed will be very visible. You may want to look for cornicing with much more projection (the bit that goes out onto the ceiling) rather than drop (the bit that comes down the wall); I would get samples of anything you are considering and see what it actually looks like. Plaster cornicing isn't actually that expensive per se; it may well cost more to install than polyurethane, though. What is important here is to make sure the style is appropriate; in an 1890 terrace it would have likely been fairly simple, but not coving as we know it today. You would also need to be sure that it didn't look too modern. It is true that the products available today are a far cry from cheap polystyrene, however I would absolutely get samples before deciding. As this is one of the things that make up the fabric of the room it is important to get it right, as it will affect the look of anything else in the room.

Hi Nic, As kiki indicates, having just a light above will potentially cause shadows, and the uneveness of the light can be problematic for some. to opt for a mirror which already has lighting built in (either top & bottom, both sides or all round) is preferable - and needn't break the bank. If you wanted to spend a little more, then we would recommend HiB mirrors - excellent quality, and the lighting is top notch, with some mirrors allowing you to vary the light from "cool" through to "warm". While some look "bathroomy", not all do! For a simpler, less expensive unit, I'd recommend the Pura Luna - it is by far our best selling mirror, and comes in a variety of sizes. List price starts at £240 (though you can usually find them well discounted!), and they're easy to install. The lights top & bottom are very subtle, so do not look too bathroomy, especially when unlit If you still prefer a retro-fit light over your mirror, then check out websites for Sensio and Sycamore lighting - should find some nice options there too. If you fit the frame flush to the wall and have sliding doors it is possible to adjust the door to one side ever so slightly to open it. However, if it was me, I would space the wardrobe out slightly and fit a filler piece of wood. Make sure to get the IKEA Pax wardrobe frames fully square and level or the doors may have to be adjusted to make them level which can result in them not opening fully. In turn this means that any internal drawers which you may or may not fit may catch against the sliding doors. You can probably get them made at any kitchen cabinet place, or make them yourself if you can with plywood - they're just rectangular boxes. Or check your local listings for a handyman if you can't. The two latter will obviously be less expensive and end up fitting better in the room.
