Brick fireplace - what would you do?
Comments (8)I would paint the ugly red wood an antique white and the bricks a lovely soft grey, then get some cheap small black tiles in a sale and tile over the red hearth tiles or maybe leave them, see how they look. Rustoleum chalk paint is just fantastic, just straight over the top, no priming, but to save paint I would seal the bricks with diluted PVA painted on and allow this to dryRustoleum chalk paint first so they don't suck the paint up....See MoreAre Ikea PAX really 'fitted wardrobes'? Recommendations please...
Comments (22)Bespoke joinery is always better to achieve maximum of storage from space you got. However with PAX there is option to match up for saving cost, however you are limited to size, if you got 190cm you need to fit 150cm and have covering panels. We did in few houses to get lower cost build in units, that we put it in PAX wardrobes and we made bespoke side panels and framing, skirting so when you close them it looks like bespoke, where inside is still IKEA....See MoreWhat are you glad you put in your kitchen, and what can you do without
Comments (123)Thank you for everyone's comments, had no idea this thread would prove so popular when I started it. We are plastering this week and we have finally bought most things for the kitchen. I did find some real 'finds' though if anyone is looking. Not sure where you are based, but regarding electrical goods we researched all our own and narrowed down our list, and once we had that we looked online for the best prices for each appliance. Instead of buying from lots of different places we took it to Bentalls, who not only matched, but also cost us less, and beat some online prices with a good 'deal' price they also then will hold on to them until you need them, but if anything goes wrong you have 'bentalls' rather than several online dealers to return items to. RDO Appliances also do this if there is one near you, but i'd advise you to research prices first. Another thing we found was inserts for the kitchens. Through our kitchen supplier these were expensive, bin inserts, pull out drawers, pull out larders, even the pop up sockets, sourced seperately through ebay and online we managed to save quite a lot of money by doing this, so our fitter will still have the right things on the day, but we are not getting the inserts from the supplier. What else..... erm kitchen worktop, unbelievably the exact same worktop, same material, same cut outs etc.. same sizes differed between suppliers by 3k! so do shop around for your quartz and granite....See MoreKitchen layout - what to do with unused space behind door?
Comments (11)Thanks both for the replies! Nicholas: there is no dishwasher, only a washing machine, and unfortunately I can't move it by the sink as it would leave a weird gap (and plumbing is in the way on the right hand side). I can't move the doorway either (the radiator is in the way, and I am trying to avoid major works to walls/doorway). OnePlan: thanks, I was previously thinking about putting the tall larder next to the fridge, but it might make that side of the kitchen look too cluttered or unbalanced with two tall units in the corner (and that would still not resolve the gap behind the door, in the right hand side bottom corner). Please see picture 1 vs picture 2 (this is a very basic sketch, not the actual units). Very good idea about the infill - I have a decorative corner post that I could put between the 60cm and the 55cm units, to create a smoother transition (see picture 3 - please ignore the dirty floor, it will be replaced). In this case - would you run the worktop a few cm longer to cover the corner post/infill, and round/cut the corner of the worktop to the contour of the corner post? I'd have to check if I have an extra 5cm or so I could use up for this purpose. Or, if the worktop only runs to cover the 60cm deep unit, and ends there, is there any other way to cover the top of the corner post? I'm also thinking about creating a seating area, maybe a little bench on that side of the wall.... Thanks for reading, and any ideas are welcome!...See MoreOasys Property Solutions
