how to create a cosy, child friendly living room/play area

Please could anyone give advice how we should decorate this room to make it more warm, cosy, child friendly?. Colours, textures, carpet suggestions? Please. We have recently purchased this property.

Only thing we have decided on is to change the existing fireplace into a double sided log fire. One side of the room will be child's play area and the other side our living room.

i do like the idea of copper accessories, maybe grey or brown carpet can't decide.

I also like copper/brown silk wallpaper maybe on one wall opposite the fireplace?

Also love tartan, tweed, very soft rug, wood on walls not sure how it would work. Any suggestions please?

would like a wall with looks of photographs of child, family.

But unsure what colour the carpet and walls should be?? Any ideas??

Silk wallpaper + kids = disaster.
Dry clean only wool throw + sticky fingers = bad idea

Wow - what an amazing room. I would skim the ceiling and put in wide oak boards which are limed or treated with Osmo wax oil. You could also clad the chimney breast in a more appealing stone.

A flickering flame surrounded by ancient carved stone - Antique stone fireplaces add both character and a sense of place to any room, the knocks and bumps of the decades nay centuries, connecting hearth to home. Even with the advent of central and underfloor heating we crave that focal gathering point that a fireplace provides - a room without a fireplace? Nowhere to hang the picture, mirror or tapestry, no were to put your cards and certainly no place to hang your Christmas stocking!

Hi - I agree with some of the others that you should add a wardrobe (preferably fitted) where the white unit currently is. Ideally you want somewhere for clothes but drawers underneath and probably some overhead storage as well I'd say. You say your son is a real book worm and I noticed a lot of books at the end of his bed - could you put shelves up there where the clock and cool sign is? Either regular shelves or ikea picture ledges look nice with books - that's what we used as per attached photo. Also could you get something like a long ikea Kallax (4x1) to fit under the bed? It might be too high but you can get ones from Argos that are smaller I think and with the baskets that fit in each hole they would be perfect for Lego? I think it's a really lovely room and with a bit of sorting could look great and work well for your son

Oh no what happened to the chairs?? I've gone right through all the chairs, several times, i transposed quite a few on to the original pic for colour visualisation. I thought all of the greys were too steely or too pale, and clashed with the sofa and walls. I comtemplated the duck egg -You'd have to buy duck egg cushions and lampshades. I finally decided that if you were not going to get the same ones again, and i think they look lovely, you just need to change the lampshades and get more cushions I tried the oatmeal oatmeal at least these went well with the sofa, and didn't clash with the walls or armchair. The last choice was something completely different, that i think goes well with the table, adds a little texture and you can re-cover the seat pads if you don't like, were the rattan. Covering to match the sofa or armchair would work well and i think they work with the table top and add a little warmth. I personally like the colours in the room already, it's really cosy and restful. However, i see that one of the suggestions for adding colour was to define the dining area with a different colour on the wall such as this, which i feel works well with the rattan Rattan Chairs I still maintain however, that the original room is much nicer, if it were me i'd be buying the same chairs ( whatever went wrong i'm not sure ), they blend in to the room well and I think all you need is extra cushions and maybe a mirror by the dining table.

I don't know what everyone likes stylewise or colours but I quite like the houses on the wall in the first pic on the wall where your sofa is. The kids could update the characters in the Windows using decals when they grow out of a phase. It's only paint so easy to paint over when they're teenagers. The rest of the walls i'd do in a scrubbable paint. Where the radiator is i'd add a table like pic 2 but with the shelves underneath the table in pic 3 for craft storage (maybe make it deep enough for a games console in the future). I'd also add cheap shelves above for art and pencil storage etc with bins etc. The desk could be raised when they grow but also used as a tv stand when they're older. The eames chairs are kids one, they're easy to keep clean and quite cheap at £25 (seat height is 32cm) for when they grow out of them. I'd add a rug in the middle and the beanbag by the bookcase. You could add a "once upon a time" or a "read" decal over the bookcase And maybe star bunting or Pom poms over the eaves to cosy up the reading area. l'd add clothes pegs on the cupboard door for their dress up stuff plus a couple of toy bags for lightweight bits. I'd keep the rest of the room free for play (although the existing drawers could be handy) and when they're older add a sofa for tv, PlayStation etc. What type of lights do you have ATM?

I'd possibly add new window fixtures, most likely pinch pleated.

Fabrics I would choose since everything in the room looks beige/cream, would be a mauve (between cream and brown) with a floral design in a darker colour.

Tie backs for each curtain to hold the curtain back giving a more elegant look.

I recommend going for a mushroom brown carpet and F&B Elephants Breath on walls, this combo can work with blacks and dark wood for furniture. I suggest tartan curtains for character. Photos of family are a great idea and you could create a photo wall, I suggest you get them printed in sepia or black & white and IKEA do some great dark wood frames. Lots of fun cushions for a friendly vibe and you've got yourself a family room!

You have an amazing room and your idea of a double sided fireplace is awesome. I agree with colourhappy in not having a carpet but a wood floor. From the description of your taste you sound as if you like rustic and homely. A wood floor would look amazing and could be dressed with animal skin rugs or arty rugs or sheepskin - you could change the look with the seasons. You also seem to have some fab retro/mid century furniture on the far side of the room. Maybe you could change your sofa to something either retro or modern (think square - see dwell.co.uk for examples) and keep this style going. Clean modern lines would really give this room a fab look. Also, as the room is both a living room and study, could you move the dining room into this room and the study to the dining room? I think the room's identity as a living space would be more consolidated this way, if it's possible.

Kids destroy carpets with juice, rusks, and various unmentionables. I would suggest an easy wash floor covering with an easy to wash rug maybe, to soften it. Leather seating is quicker to clean than slip covers and you will need a large cage type fire guard on each side of the log burner once your child becomes mobile as I imagine the panes will get hot.
