Ideas for big loft space with 1.7m head height

We have a huge left space running the full length of the house but with restricted head height. We would love to use the space for either children's play/sleeping at one end, accessed through their rooms, and possibly a mezzanine storage/dressing area at the other accessed through the master bed. Are there rules/regulations regarding head height and fire safety? Any other id ease for the space?
