Hi all
I need help with this window. As we approach lighter days I need a way to block the sun out. I'd also like to avoid giving peeping Toms a good show.
I'm a fan of minimal window dressings so always prefer blinds. Any suggestions what I can do with this?

Comments (81)Hiya Jill, thanks for sending those images over. In response to your first question about your bedroom, I can think of a couple of solutions that may work. The first is the same solution as my previous French window answer to @montbray and fit something that moves with the window, either a Pleated or a Venetian which operate under tension and open with a thumb tab rather than a cord. Alternatively, it would look quite nice if a blind, particularly a Roman blind was fitted right to the top of the wall above the window, at the ceiling. This will allow the blind to be ‘dressed’ to form a valance effect above the window when the blind is open, giving full view from, and use of the window and when it is closed, it will give the illusion of the window being taller. In the case of your bathroom blind, you might like to try a waterproof Roller blind made from PVC fabric. Alternatively, Faux wood blinds are a really great idea, as they have all the look of traditional Wooden blinds, but won't warp in wet or steamy conditions. Comments (46)Have you considered shutters? They give a real ‘wow’ factor and really make a feature of both rectangular and bay windows. You said your bay window looks out on the back garden. With shutters you can adjust the louvres to allow as little or as much ‘view-through’ into the garden. They would also give the privacy you need in a bedroom, as well as making the room dark enough for sleeping when the louvres are completely closed. You said you’re not changing the structural element of the room or the windows. By having shutters within the apertures, they would not get in the way of any cupboards or other modifications you might eventually make to the room. Another asset of shutters is that it doesn’t matter if windows are at different heights. Having the same product across all windows in a space creates a lovely considered and unified look. Also, when windows are above radiator (as in your square bay) and you have long curtains, you tend to lose heat behind the curtains. As shutters are insulating and fitted above the radiator, they can be used to reflect the radiator heat into your room. In a nutshell, shutters create a lovely aesthetic look in a room. You don’t need to dress the windows in any other way as they are a wow factor in their own right. Shades of white will make the room appear even larger. Comments (6)These show the barn in its current state, taken from the doorway. The stone is beautiful although there are some areas which have had to be plaster skimmed as they are filled-in doorways. The stairs will go up on the right hand foreground. The table football will go at the back right, the table tennis front right, and the movie watching area will be under the mezzanine. I am planning up/down lighters on the left hand wall, one between each of the windows and doors along there. As you can see, the beams are very high (even the cross beam) so i am not sure how to light the table tennis area, given the risk of high shots. I thought a couple of huge industrial pendants might work well elsewhere (not under mezzanine, obv), but I can't really do a row of them because of the table tennis so it may look odd just to have one or two. Comments (3)I tend to agree with Jonathan. The lounge is a walk through to the kitchen / dining area. The courtyard is amazing, but the lounge for me is marred by the fact that at the back of it is a pantry and Utility room which are not closed off from it. This also creates a substantial 'dead' area at the back of the lounge. It's definitely not so strange to have a dining table near the kitchen items ( pantry and Utility ), therefore, the lounge is better towards the rear. The lounge would be lovely where it is if it weren't for the pantry and utility. Can that part of the plan be tweaked so that it's not in the lounge? Maybe a little tweak of the pantry and utility could be done, so that access is not via the lounge and is hidden from it? Something like this? ( very rough idea )...See More

8 years agoWow some great ideas. It's such a lovely feature that I am willing to spend a bit of money to keep the shape of the window. I'll have a look into all the suggestions and report back. At the moment it looks like this

8 years agoWhat about something like this? Not a very good photo, I'm afraid....but I didn't want a curtain rail to spoil the lines of the wall above my French Windows, so I found this screen frame in a junk shop and made the panels with two layers of fabric, a lining of 'bump' and Velcro top and bottom to hold it in place. I just move and stack the panels when I want more light/less privacy.
