Garden ideas please

Hi, we're coming to halfway point of our extension and need to start planning the garden. We know that there will be a level threshold patio out from the bi fold doors that goes up to the fence then down steps to the garden ....

I have 2 ideas, option 1 is to replace the decking area with the durable plastic decking and put Artificial grass in the remaining area, this will be 6k ish

Option 2 is to have a retaining wall built at the end of the garden, have the same patio that is by the bi folds run the length of the garden along the same side as bi folds and then turf the rest up to the end of the wall and add glass balustrade 10k ish

Also open to other ideas, advice or suggestions.

We use the garden for relaxing, I don't want borders as don't have much time for maintenance and have stiff at the front to do.

I have just had my kitchen floor tiled in porcelain tiles that are woodplank style, it looks lovely and can actually be used outdoors, you could make your patio follow on from the floor material in your kitchen to blur the boundary between indoors and out. Tiles are very low maintenance compared to decking too. Then because you are looking for a low maintenance garden, I would look at decorative gabions to make the retaining wall and plant alpines so that they grow down the sides eventually. It looks like you have children from the climbing frame and trampoline so, how about putting weed-proof membrane and a deep layer of bark chipping instead of grass and letting them have the lower area for a play area. Not much maintenance needed, just top up of chippings. Included a few houzz photos for inspiration

As a starter, if you haven't already considered it. we have seen a huge influx of people using artificial grass in their gardens recently. It is easy to maintain and has a number of uses. i.e. you can use it with garden furniture all year round. Hope this helps :)

Fabulous view! I think you are right to prioritise your children (and dog!) as they do need to let off steam. Your idea of moving all the bins etc over to one side is a good idea. You can then put up some fencing to screen it out of view, but leave access of course. The concrete area is a bit of an eye sore (hope I’m not offending you!). If you have the budget, I would get the concrete broken up and then lay attractive slabs, using the broken concrete as a hardcore base. Sandstone is most attractive and creates a lovely natural effect and it’s not too pricey. Porcelain is becoming very popular for patios and gives a more modern look. You may need a landscaper if you want it done well. That would be a great place to sit out. What aspect does the garden face? This will determine where you place seating areas and planting. if it is sunny where your planters are, then herbs and lavender will do very well. Peonies are not keen on being moved, but I’ve done it and as long as they are watered in well they should be fine. A pergola is a great idea. Choose a sunny spot ( you will use it more). Wisteria are big strong heavy plants so a pergola would be a good sturdy support. Some plants cope better with children and dogs than others, and of course aspect is crucial. Some plants need a good burst of sun, whilst others would wilt and need shadier spots. I am no designer, but I think if, to start, you created planting beds all around your perimeters, say 1m wide, remove the grass, dig in several bags of compost, there you need the right plants in the right place to succeed. That way the middle of the garden can be used by the children and dog. Below are some ideas, and I am happy to suggest plants once I know which parts of the garden are sunny or shady.

Well you could definitely save money by leaving the grass as it is and not astroturfing it. The grass looks great, & other than not wanting to cut it regularly, I’m not sure why you’d want to replace it, plus real grass is beneficial to wildlife / birds for getting worms, etc. Keep the grass & spend the money saved on getting someone in to cut it regularly - I’m sure a local teenager would happily do it for a tenner a time. The plants where you’ve mentioned you’d like seating areas look like box plants which are fairly pricey as they get bigger so if you remove them, consider selling them to get some money back. However they would also be good planted as structural plants elsewhere in the garden. Although you’re not green fingered, maybe your children might like a small area to dig in / plant some seeds, when they’re not busy bouncing! Good luck, I’m sure you’ll get other ideas on here too.

Hi there, Eventhough you have lost a chunk of the garden to the extension, you still have a very good space in there. It is just not laid out in the best way possible. I think that using the concrete base of the area where you are going to remove part of your shed will result in a patio area that is too small and not fit for purpose. If you can reduce the shed size that is great, but I would creat a patio/seating area where the swing currently is. I will ensure it is nice and surrounded by planting and would pottentially add in a pergola to add some height. In this area, you will get a bit of the afternoon sun. I would do a small patio right outside of your patio doors with a small table or maybe just a bench in case you want to enjoy the late morning sun. I would also aim to bring the planting a bit more to the centre of the garden to create interest. Also, when choosing the planting,be mindful to match it to your garden environmental co ditio s so they thrive. Looks like a great blank canvas... exciting to be planning your garden space! I would try to avoid a straight line of paving at the side of the garden, also would urge you to have a think about adding some plant interest, it does not need to be something that requires maintenance, but it will lend so much to the space. It is amazing the difference a small tree, an area of planting and some pots will make to your space. Enjoy your planning!
