Plaster

I love the plaster on the ceiling, I am currently trying to get my plasterer to get this made for me but he has asked me to get a mold made. Any tips on how I can go about doing this???

Hello and thank you for the question. It sounds like you are
on the right track. Typically our plaster contractor handles the fabrication
and the mold of the plaster ceiling. We
prefer our plaster contractor to coordinate this process to ensure the best
quality possible. Additionally, if any issues arise from the mold or
installation, the plaster contractor will be able to manage and correct it in an

Yes, the brush marks don't appear visible and the finish of the plaster itself (including directional marks etc) remain visible. A word of caution though I have also used Polyvine over painted walls (flat matt paint and flat matt polyvine) and on the painted surface I do see more brush marks. It's not terrible but (to my eye at least) you can see the application marks. I used the polyvine to add extra protection on the wall going up the stairs which is always subject to scuffs and knocks. At first I just took the Polyvine half way up the wall but it was very obvious where it stopped. I ended up just doing the whole wall with the Polyvine nd that looks a lot better and you don't particularly notice a difference between the trated wall and the other untreated ones. evident where it stopped and t

Thanks, Sarah! That could work for the painted plain lower walls if they aren't too bad. I also need a slightly textured one for ceilings that are really wonky 🤣 Can anyone suggest one that not too offensive? Pattern wise 🙈

As Sarah says you need to remove the cause of the problem first. Perhaps this was the old windows. If it were my house I would have skirtings off and remove the plaster that has got some damp in it. While at it I would see if the bay has sufficient insulation, replaster, new nicer skirting and a radiator that is less tall and so fits the space better. You might be tempted to try and get away with a damp sealing paint but although the easiest and cheapest route it will never look very good.

I think I would ask a painter to comment on the cracks. Hairline cracks are almost impossible to fill before painting and will show through the finished freshly painted wall. It could be settlement, it could be a skim coat cracking, it could be many things. Lining paper sounds like a viable option to me although you said you'd rather avoid it. You could do a test patch. Pick a patch about 300mm sq with a lot of cracks. Paint one coat of your choice (sample pot) over it. Do a second and possibly a third coat allowing drying time of at least a day in between. Observe it for a least a month. This could prove tedious. You could just risk it and paint but the cracks may reappear in your hard work.
