Help! How to modernise / increase curb appeal on my 1970s dormer house
Comments (16)Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? It may be an idea to sketch out various options (with colour!) to see what you like then get quotes on the various options http://linleydevelopments.co.uk/portfolio/bungalow-to-a-chalet-style-conversion/#prettyPhoto[portfolio]/1/...See MoreExterior styling of 1970s house (windows and doors)
Comments (8)Hi Greg, I think the windows definitely need to change. Casement does seem like a good option as it gives you more glass and are affordable. You could go for some powder coated aluminium to match the garage? but this is a much higher price. The door is a nice touch and I personally like them but it really depends on the style you are going for with your interiors (and exteriors) and whether this is in keeping with that. Is it something you need? and if not.. will it really support the style you are going for? I think it is hard to give too much advise because I don't really know what you are trying to achieve at this point. If you are having trouble visualising your space, I offer a great 3D package will give you a chance to see what different options will look like before you make any costly purchases. Comments (19)I agree with earlier posts that say the door is an individual choice- I think all the choices you have considered sit well with the house. As far as making the front more interesting I would have new stone flags laid in front of the door and have this area a little wider and deeper so it is more imposing. I would cut boarders against the house to soften the hard landscaping and better highlight the front entrance. I think the flatness of the exterior that you have described is because there is no window to the right of the front door and trellis could help with this. I also think your porch light is undersized. Personally I think that when you have better signposted the entrance you won’t feel an additional porch will add anything. In my opinion this house is actually very attractive now, is probably 20 years newer than your estimate and likely only needs a light touch to make a big improvement....See MoreChanging the exterior of our 1970's house - advice needed!
Comments (7)Hi Ciara I love the idea of full height doors for the garage conversion but would consider the practicality of it, think about where the desk will go. It will not add to pavement appeal if the desk is against the glass and you can see the messy bits that tend to gather under a desk. Crittal style steel windows are exorbitantly expensive, but I agree with Jonathan the house lends itself to multi paned windows. You might want to look at good quality PVC options. I would suggest the roof gets a jet wash as the green moss should come off and reveal the colour of the roof....See More- 8 years ago
