What's more important Price or Design?

So we've been talking about exactly how important price is when designing your home. More often then not people have spent their budget before they even contact us to purchase items such as Door Handles, Locks, Hinges, light switches etc but often face the dilemma of price or design.

Some of our customers don't care about the look they just want the cheapest door hardware going and don't think they contribute much to the finished 'look' of their home.

Whilst other customers want the 'perfect' handle/hardware that reflects the decor of their home even if it means spending a little extra money and going over budget.

We're curious to know what's more important to you... Price or Design?

Compromise - Buy the cheapest of the best designs

We didn't intend to buy our retirement home with a view but when this adorable French Norman one story home on a big lot with a view went up for sale at a reduced price, we bought it the first day. The home needed lots of updating but the view was perfect as is. It combines the mountains in the distance, beautiful sky, neighboring trees, and some cityscapes, but the openness really does make your home feel larger and more private. We live in S Cal and spend more time outdoors than inside our wonderfully remodeled home. First view in 40 years of marriage and we must say it's pretty awesome!

What is the most important factor when you choose the internal doors?

I think that they should go with the style of the building! I hate to see mock Georgian white paneled doors in modern housing - although builders in the UK tend to use them a lot. Like all things they tend to go in fashions though, once it was solid pine, then flat wood effect etc, etc. As a designer and householder though, I tend to prefer something in keeping with the building, and hoping decor that's in tune with the exterior, so the doors would fit in with it all anyway!

A place to immediately take your dirty boots and wet raincoat off. I've seen lots of entrances designed nicely with a thought of minimalism which had just a closed wardrobe at the opposite corner to hide your closes and shoes in, and there always 've been a problem of a pile of dirty boots near the door or a dirty footprints 'road' between a door and a shoe-washing place and puddles of water from raincoats on the way to the wardrobe. Design should be practical. Entrance is a transition room between dirty street and cozy rooms, so it has to provide smooth transition, giving you things which make your life easier and more comfortable. If it's hard for you to lace your shoes standing, it has to have a seat. If you have a big family, you need a place (it may be just a mat or kind of open shelving) near the door to take all of your shoes off. If it's rainy or snowy where you live you need some spot to let your coats dry a bit before hiding them to the wardrobe and so on. If you use umbrellas, you need a spot to put it once you enter the house... There are lots of other practical things you may need.

Depends entirely on client circumstance - as an architect I'd go for quality every time. BUT if a client isn't going to stay in that house long-term and it's not a very high-end area, quality is less important. Sometimes a family is running out of space and they'll sacrifice quality for increased floor area. Quality is also subjective so if a client wants a cheap floor material or cheaper windows, I'll have a conversation about what the compromise is (durability, look, sustainability etc etc) but ultimately it's their choice. Everyone wants their project done quickly but understanding that small builders can't always deliver that without additional cost is important.

Design wins out for me. You don't always have to use the same finishing touches throughout your home either, if cost is an issue. You can always use the most desired items where you have it on view i.e at eye level. For example, plug sockets only swap in nice ones where they are on view, leave the ones hidden behind the TV!
