Blinds or curtains at bi-fold doors?

We're just starting to build a rear extension and we've planned to have a run of bi-fold doors opening out onto the patio from the dining area. As the patio area is quite small and overlooked we feel we will need to hang blinds or curtains to give some privacy but I can't find many example photos of how this would look.

Does anyone have any photos of bi-fold or patio doors dressed with curtains etc? What works well? Is it worth having a curtain track recessed into the ceiling during the building phase?

Ideas / suggestions / photos / inspiration really welcome. Thanks!

I've compiled the choices for you with illustrations on the different types to help you make up your mind x

Bi-Folds with fitted external blinds the fittings of which are bespoke and match the door colour - allowing you to change the blinds in the future if you change your colour scheme.

Integral blinds in the the fabric of the window

curtains externally fitted either side

Blinds behids a 'secret' panel so they look like they come from above

Blinds fitted above with no panelling to hide the top

Hiya, What a gorgeous space - I bet you can't wait to make the most of it now the weather is getting warmer! There are a few suggestions we'd offer. It's hard to tell from your photos what material your doors are, but for uPVC frames we offer something called PerfectFit. This is where the blinds clip directly into the frame without the need for drilling, and is available with our Pleated, Roller and Venetian blind ranges. Alternatively, a Roller blind would create a really sleek and stylish look. I've attached a picture of our Painterly Duck Egg Roller blinds at a bi-fold door as an illustration. However, for a cosy feel, as you mention, a Pleated blind is also a fantastic choice. Attached is an image of our Montoya Azure Pleated blinds to show how well they can make a statement at the window. Our ThermaShade range is also a great way to stop heat from escaping from your windows - the clever honeycomb fabric traps heat and will contribute to the cosy effect you crave. Hi Perrin out of interest is it a detachable cord that you attach by magnet to the top of each bifold door to operate the blinds & then detach & store in a cupboard? We saw these at the Ideal Home Show last year & ordered them when we purchased our bifold doors/windows. However, unfortunately when we returned home on installation day the wrong blinds had been fitted & we didn’t like the white strip down each pane. I’ve just paid the deposit to get the blinds changed to anthracite (to blend in better!) but am wondering if yours are what we had initially seen but could never source?!

Excellent. Thanks for the visual. Always helps as builders are only at the foundation stage at the moment! 28m3 of concrete pumped on the site last week as our house built on higher ground so extension has to match ground level and we're adding a first level extension too. A long way to go but take each day at a time. No more projects for you then?!

Hi otleymum! There is another option – Integrated Doors. We have a Folding Door available with shades that are built into the doorframe. So when you require privacy the shades are there but when you don't, they retract back into the frame, leaving the view out to your patio uninterrupted. Good luck with your extension!

We moved into a house with bifold doors and I didn't want to spend an absolute fortune on large bespoke curtains for them. So I found some beautiful ones on the high street that were the correct height, then bought two pairs. I found an extra long curtain rail online and whilst I was going to originally sew the pairs together to make two large curtains - one either side of the door, I actually left them separate. This way I can pull three of the four closed but leave one pulled back on the opening side door, making access easier. Hope that makes sense!
