Need help for my small living/dining room with awkward layout
My husband and i have just moved into our first home and after saving some money, we want to now plan the renovation. One of the rooms that give us the biggest challenge is our living room. its not very big and the layout is not the best. we love the house and really want to design and modernize it so that its practical and stylish so we need help.
I would love to here your ideas on how we can lay out the furniture in this room (we will be getting new furniture), how to maximize the room with lighting choices( should we go with spot lights because of the low ceiling or keep a ceiling light, if you would go with carpet or wooden floor (we were thinking dark wooden floor with either light grey or white walls), paints colors etc. I have added a few of my favourite rooms on houzz, if we could end up with a place with the same feel i would be very happy. Any other suggestions would also be very greatly received.
The sofas are hand me downs so they will go eventually as well as the dining chairs.

Comments (6)Hi. I agree, too, with flipping the two areas. Put your L-shaped sofa with the long section opposite the long wall and using the back of it to create your hallway from the front door, the TV opposite on the long wall and the dining table and chairs near the kitchen. I don't know whether you have a left or right L, but if it is a left hand one, that part will go under the window. If it is a right, it'll help divide up the space. Comments (16)Have you thought of rearranging the furniture so the tv isn't the focal point? Furniture against walls can make a room appear smaller. If the budget permits I would add a coffee table to bring furniture into the middle of the room. I would also add a mirror to the dining area to bounce light and maybe install a low hanging pendant light over the table. I would also choose a neutral coloured rug as using a single colour for an item becomes the focal point. Grey is a good modern neutral for walls. If you want to use paper on a smaller wall choose a small pattern that won't date unless you don't mind repapering to keep it up to date. There are some really fantastic papers around at the moment such as chinoiserie, bold contemporary and typography but it depends on your preferred style? Maybe use plain (not patterned as this may date or your taste will change) velvet or silk curtains to soften the room. Use different colours and textures for the accessories to avoid block colours as per comment above. Comments (12)Dear Caroline, Congratulations on your new flat! Not wanting to assume, are the steps leading downstairs to the kitchen start as you enter the room? Couple of things for you to consider: - Storage unit on the other side of the stair (is there a bannister/wall/railing?); please do send through pictures. It might be possible to fit in a bookcase as a divider (recommend a low one and to accessorise the top, for example, with a vase, lamp, picture frames and candles. - Your lounge area is not that small; however, rather than a couch and a chair, have you considered an L-shaped sofa, with a coffee table in front of it and a TV unit across on the opposite wall. - What is your budget and preferred design style? - What is the flooring? Thank you so much for the help, those are such great ideas and i love the paint colour as well. I will not be keeping the display cabinet, it was left for us when we bought the house and its been useful to keep all our junk in it but its a bit old fashioned. I really like the dining table so i will find nice looking chairs to go with it. i have bought this light for above the dining table.
Finding a light for the living room is now the next challenge since they will have to look nice together (that's why i had thought spot lights because they seemed the easier option).
All the doors in the house look like the one in the picture so they will all be changed. The door that you can see leads to the hallway. to make the hallway brighter i was going to change that particular door to a glassed one to bring more light in.

Hi Laura, i did not have plans to knock through to the kitchen at the moment. I think if i was to do that i would also then want to extend the living room because i am afraid it would look so small if i closed it off. 
7 years ago- 7 years agoHello. We decided to close of the door from the living room that led to the hallway leaving the door to the dining room for use instead. That allowed us to use that space for a sofa and side table plus we even have a mirror up on it. I got help designing the rooms by a lovely internet designer whom you can found here on house as well as the design she did for our living room. We have done everything she designed exactly and we love it.
