Beautiful osmanthus burkwoodi tree

Please can you advise how to create this effect from the shrub? Would it work to buy a shrub about 1.5 m high and prune back hard in spring/autumn?

This is years of growth and pruning by specialist nurseries. In theory, yes you can buy a young shrub and begin to prune into shape but it's likely to be a bit hit and miss as you won't have the same level of experience as the nursery. The plants pictured were sourced semi-mature.

You can train Garrya elliptica as a wall shrub, ditto Rhamnus alaternus variegatus - they both perform really well in the shade and make a great backdrop for other plants. Osmanthus heterophyllus is one of my favourite shrubs for shade, as is Daphne odora variegata. For some early scent try Sarcococca and Viburnum bodnantense 'Charles Lamont'. For softening the edges there is nothing better in dry shade than Epimedium (loads of different varieties, but my favourite is Frohnleiten). Tellima grandiflora is another fantastic plant for dry shade. If it's not too shady you'll also get some of the herbaceous geraniums (Rozanne is a good long-flowering one) to survive. Other people have mentioned ferns, but they really like moisture, however, Dryopteris erythrosora and Polystichum setiferum will both take a bit of dry shade. Pulmonaria, Tiarella and Brunnera 'Jack Frost' also like to be in the shade and work very well as part of a naturalistic scheme. One of my favourite climbers for shade is Vitis coignetaie, it will grow in deep shade and gives fantastic autumn colour. You can also use Clematis armandii, but it can get a bit too vigorous.

Here are my go-to evergreen shrubs: Choisya ternata (you can also use the gold variety 'Sundance') - keep it clipped into a mounded to control size, beautiful, scented white flowers in summer, Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki' - looks a bit like holly and very tough, again, keep clipped - it won't grow too large and stays in a tight shape, Myrtus communis - again, white flowers, again holds a nice shape, but keep clipped so it doesn't get too big, Hebe pinguifolia 'Sutherlandii' - is a low growing mound forming Hebe with white flowers in summer, doesn't need pruning, pair the Hebe with Phormium 'Bronze Baby' for contrast - it's a smaller Phormium and hardier than some. Use some Hydrangeas and Paeonies for a spot of colour. I would not use Cordeline as they eventually grow a stem and get very large and leggy. Put in some grasses for texture - depending on how big you want to go. Smaller grasses - Pennisetum 'Hamelyn', Deschampsia cesspitosa, Stipa tenuissima. Larger grasses - Mischanthus, Calamagrostis. Cut back in late winter - very easy to look after. Instead of annuals use low-growing perennials - die back in winter, re-emerge in summer, so need to re-plant each year. My favourites - Geranium 'Rozanne', Sedum 'Purple Emperor', Geranium 'Dragonsheart', Eryngium 'Bourgatii', Vinca minor, Teucrium lucidris, Heuchera 'Obsidian'. If you want some taller perennials use Salvia 'Caradonna', Helenium 'Wyndley', Kniphofia 'Tawny King', Veranicastrum 'Apollo', Echinacea 'Purpurea', Aster frikartii 'Monch', Iris 'Butter and Sugar'. Plant in minimum clumps of 3 and upwards in odd numbered groups. Add some early flowering bulbs and you should have colour year-round. Hi JC. I think the layout of the path will be quite important as well as deciding which plants to have. It looks like there is a lot of footfall on the lawn next to the patio so I think any path needs to start from here. Had you thought what material you’d like the path to be made out of? The size of the borders will depend on what plants you’d like to have, shrubs and trees will most likely need more space and can encroach on your lawn space. The suggestions above are all good tho and most of them are very hardy and tolerant of most soils. For privacy on the right fence I might go fo one main shrub, perhaps a Lilac and a tallish evergreen. If you get young specimens they’ll adapt to the soil better. In the meantime you could attach some trellis to the fence and grow some climbers such as the clematis Montana, honey suckle or star jasmine. I think the way to pick a planting plan is not to rush it but start with your star attractions first, the larger plants, shrubs or trees, look them up and find out their eventual height and spread. Then the rest you can fill in with the smaller things, like the perennials and bulbs. Be sure to check what conditions each plant likes, sun/shade etc. I bought this plant yesterday at a plant fair, Sambucas nigra ‘black lace’. It can grow very large but can be hacked back quite vigorously with little effect and is very hardy. Good job really as my garden isn’t huge and it’s staying in a container:-) Good luck with your garden, it’s a lovely space.

I like Sonia’s idea for an obelisk and a climber. The winter flowering jasmine might be nice and give you some winter colour ( p.s. I’m no good at remembering the Latin names:)). Alternatively I thought some flowering spikes might look interesting with the natural looking mix, so something like perennial foxgloves, verbascum, acanthus (think there’s an evergreen variety of this), penstemon etc. For spring flowering you also look at Aquilegia, some of the vulgaris varieties can grow quite tall (up to 1m). They do have a tendency to self seed everywhere tho but easily controlled and very pretty when in flower. I think an evergreen of some sort would look good and anchor the rest of the planting, something that’s easily controlled such as osmanthus holly olive, yew, or the upright euonymus, all slow growing and won’t be fussed about being clipped.
