What to grow along a fence under a big tree?

We have a bit of a tricky situation - a new build garden (read: simply a lawn with awful soil/rubble/building waste underneath) with some beautiful old oak trees hanging over our garden fence. The trees however, are very tall which means the (dead) grass near the fence line still receives quite a lot of sun throughout the day. The combination is very dry soil with lots of tree roots but I'd like to try and grow something (ideally evergreen) along the fence to replace the dead grass. Does anyone have any wonderful suggestions of what might work? Thank you!
