Is it possible to resurface old floor tiles rather than replace them?

I suspect paint would not last long.

What sort of tiles? and what is wrong with the surface? Have you got any pics?

We bought an old Mill house 4 years ago and are still decorating and renovating. I think we always will, but absolutely no regrets! I love it! I will confess that I have made a few mistakes, which we are now fixing, as we now know what we would like and what suits the building. I completely agree with the comments on lime plaster. All of the rooms are light but soft colours and I have fallen in love with Crown and Rose Authentic Chalk paint. We have dogs and I love the way that I can clean off any small tail wag splatters and the paint looks brand new afterwards. We have lots of beams and stone, so have decided to go for a rustic but comfy look, but with a few rather French looking items, like a big French dresser in the dining room. Light walls in soft whites and creams, which don't clash too much with the different stone and woods types. I have tried other colours, but it just doesn`t really look right and ended up going back to the neutrals. These houses have low ceilings and small windows, so keeping light was an important issue for us. The colours come from the cushions, throws and soft furnishings in sage greens and warm purples. The dining room, looks stark but rustic and interesting. Currently would like to find a large rustic wood or antler chandelier for above the table. Floors downstairs are currently old school quarry tiles in half and wooden floors in the nest, with a cheeky bit of rhino vinyl floor in the main hall. The quarry tiles are original, but long term, I would love to rip up the wood/vinyl and add in flagged floors, so been bothering our suppliers about how well under floor heating may work with flag stones... :) Upstairs is thick underlay, as when they built houses in that day, they didn`t really worry about sound travel, then carpeted. Best move I have ever made!!! Even when things go wrong, I don`t really care, as I am renovating for the love of it this time, not for money! Exciting times!!

Hello mv5869, haha yes... my technical wording! A hand held spray gun is what I was thinking of..... Like they use for cars! I was rather thinking of one of these... I haven't spray painted anything but rather feel you'll get better results than from a can... You may even be able to hire something... Grey or charcoal or a nickel colour would be lovely yes... I nearly suggested it.. : ))

Jonathandb1972, I was thinking of going with a grout that is the same colour or lighter than the grey tile. The hex will be grouted in a medium grey. This has already been done in the loo (the hex) and looks great. Neither are grouted in the above picture. Do you think there will still be issues with where the grout lines are if they are the same or lighter than the tile? Also, where the hex tile in the shower meets the grey tile will mainly be covered by the shower's profile. However, the shower only goes up to about 2m, so there will still be a visible "meeting" of tiles above that. My builder is a little concerned about how this will look as he will have to cut small pieces of tile to fill up the edge, which may stain once they start grouting. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best...

Hi, Is there anything that makes you think it would be difficult to remove and replace the existing tiles? It looks like you have a wall hung wc pan (hard to tell in the photos), so no problem with that, and the tiled bath panel helps as well. If there was electric underfloor heating then it would make sense to avoid lifting the existing but otherwise its the best way to do it. If fitting a new floor you would want to have new sealant to the perimeter of the room, floors to wall, anyway so that would cover any join between the new floor and existing walls. Personally I would remove and replace with whatever you like, tiles amtico etc. etc. Then you have a brand new floor that you know will last. Sheet vinyl over the top of the existing will show the indentations of the existing grout lines and anything else will add unnecessary height to the threshold and may be uneven. Good luck with the work and make sure to post up photos when its all done.

.........you could tile on top of them there are lovely porcelain tiles of only 6mm of thickness!

We're just completing a commercial project where we saved the client considerable time and money on removal of existing tiles by overlaying with Amtico wood-effect vinyl. It's approx. 6mm thick, looks great (apologies for the mess in the photo!) and can be specified with enhanced slip-resistance. Perhaps worth looking into?
