TV and fireplace placement

We're in the process of renovating our living area. We would like to install a built in wood fire with a traditional mantle built around it. The trouble is that our old oil burner is already built into the centre of the room which dictates where the fireplace can go because there's already a flu there. If it really came down to it, I guess we could move the fireplace if we had to. I don't think the TV can go above the fireplace because the heat and smoke from the wood fire would damage it (correct me if I'm wrong). To add to this dilemma, there's going to be a doorway on the far left of this wall and I'd ideally like to keep the cedar panelling on the wall. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Leave the fireplace where it is, corner fireplaces are notorious for being hard to decorate around, and moving it just a bit seems like a lot of money and work for just a bit...when the door goes in then you can decide on maybe adding some builtins to the wall to help beef it up some, leaving room on the right for the tv not above the fireplace

Personally I think that a TV, fireplace and two different wall treatments in one wall will be too busy.
I think you should take off the cedar cladding and have a smooth painted finish around the whole room. Perhaps you could use the paneling elsewhere- how about fitting it vertically to make the room seem taller- perhaps you have a strip on the opposite side of the room and use it as a backdrop for things you want to display.

TV above Fireplace - solving the neck ache! We would recommend above the Fireplace, but with a Picture Frame or better still converted into a Mirror TV. Most Lounges centre around the Fireplace, so it seems obvious to put it there for easy viewing - but they, by definition, are always mounted TOO HIGH ... The picture shown shows us a example of a badly installed TV where no thought has been put into the interior design of that element in the room. I can almost guarantee a Technology Advisor was not involved in the project as they would have found a better solution for the finish. Sometime the area above the fireplace is the only space in the room the TV can go, and when its property thought out it can work.

Great comments thanks. Interesting to consider breaking the area up. So far we'd been focussed on as open plan as possible with quite a contemporary 'free hanging' type woodburner Fire. But maybe we could utilise the old timber chimney to create a separation between The dining and living areas open on all four sides. I've attached a picture of it (actually there are two there right now, bit tricky to see in the photo but hope you get the idea. This 'barn level' is what will become the floor of the plan you're considering). I like this idea of using this, could make a great centrepiece and use some of the existing traditional building materials which we'd like to maximise but probably it makes my layout dilemma even harder as when facing the fireplace (which would have to be further left than on the plan I guess) we'd be facing completely away from the view and probably TV. Mmm more thinking needed but nice idea. Maybe the 'mobile' TV stand idea could help this. The other slight consideration is that one day the place may be rented to a chalet holiday company so the dining and sitting spaces have to have enough room to seat 12-14. Meaning we can't break it up too much. All views very welcome. Would love to hear your thoughts. Many thanks. Richard.

Remove the Cedar Panelling from where you want the fireplace to go, I presume it's brick or blockwork behind it. Build a new Fireplace tied in to the original wall and go straight out the roof. Take advice from a builder obviously. I personally would not put the T.V above the Fireplace as it could be affected by heat, plus, the fireplace is supposed to be the centre piece and focal point, not the T.V. You could build low units under the cedar panelling and place the t.v to the side on one of those. Then remove the Wood burner giving you extra floor space and one easier to furnish around.

I had a similar issue with a central fireplace. I'm not a fan of tv's being above fireplaces but was also conscious of not wanting to distract too much from the fireplace. Ended up doing a plan in Photoshop to 'balance' the TV with some prints above it and bookcases the other side.
