where do you dry laundry in a small utility room

we are designing a small utility toom and there is space for a dryer and washing machine to be stacked on top of each other and a cupboard for cleaning products, iron board hoover etc...but where does one dry the laundry? Any tips as to places to hang clothes?

You could use one of these which I intend to put in my utility room. You can pull the line out when you need it and put it back when finished. Making it look more tidy.

I don't think there are hard and fast rukes on this but I am pretty sure not having a utility room would put a buyer off. Houses bulit in the 60s on esates generally had utility rooms and smallish kitchens, over the years many people knocked through to open them up then here we are 50 odd years later wanting a utility room. Having said that the house we have just got has a small long kitchen so were pleased to find we had a utility room that is actually larger than the kitchen( can't turn these around as utility at the back of the house, so you need to walk through the kitchen to get there) plus toilet/sink. Had we not had that we would struggle with where the washer would go.

We have a pull-out section in a wardrobe with 3 sections (whites, brights and darks) for dirty laundry. It's in our bedroom so might be a pain if there were other people in the house. I keep meaning to put in some fabric bags (the drawer is a bit too deep) to make it easier. Clean stuff for ironing is on the shelf above. The ironing board is set up in a spare bedroom but I like to iron in our bedroom so that I can watch TV at the same time. Plus the clothes can be put back easily into the wardrobes without carting them around the house.

Yes, it is doable in that space! I would look for a Howdens builder (maybe who fitted your kitchen) or a designer (like me) who have a Howdens account and can design the space for you and arrange the Howdens units for you. With our package/designer we would also help with colour of the walls and any styling required (like floors, lighting etc) so you can have the room done to compliment the rest of the house to be functional and stylish.

Shauni's suggesged plan is good and allows a view out if you glaze or part glaze each door. I would consider adding a surface mounted sliding door to the loo to make it easier to navigate the space and let more light in. Could the washer and dryer not go upstairs in the cupboards next to your bathroom? Or has this bit changed? Would give you space for a boot room next to the garden which would be a good use of this space.

Do you have a cupboard anywhere that you could put a clothes rail in? I dry most clothes on hangers ready for ironing and then put the smalls in the dryer

You can utilize ceiling space.

I have a beadboard on the wall which folds away once I'm done so it's not always in the way.

We got these from IKEA and fitted them to the wall. Great for when you can't hang your washing outside xx

Why not go back to the old fashioned way of drying them outside in the first instance and then finishing in the dryer if you don't want to use it? My wife refuses to put towels outside first as it spoils their fluffiness, but everything else can go out. A little confused as to why you need a drier and hanging space for wet clothes inside. I was always told it wasn't good to dry clothes inside as it causes condensation.

items to dry inside created much condensation, water dripped down walls and windows. So we installed a humidity operated extractor
that automatically removes damp air and thus hastens drying. We can leave wet items hanging overnight and
both they and utility room are entirely dry by morning.

Man About The House, what does your wife do about items which cannot go in the dryer when we get 2 weeks of heavy rain, as so often happens here in the UK? I try to dry everything outside whenever possible (except towels, like your wife), but sometimes I do need to wash non-dryer items in uncooperative weather.

I can't think of much that can't go in a dryer.........maybe some delicate wool items. They usually get spun and then hung over a radiator on hangers, but they're few and far between,

I usually find there are a couple of items per load (other than bedclothes and towel loads) which have labels saying not to tumble dry. I don't stick to that for all those items, but often I can see a reason why.

Also, some items benefit from drying flat, and those IKEA racks which Emma Thompson suggested would allow that.

We have our wm & td stacked in the utility & hang items that can't go In the td on a clothes horse in the conservatory. However, we've just sold the conservatory & are building an extension so the back of the house will be open plan & wont be having be a clothes horse on display....going to install a pulley maid in the utility www.pulleymaid.com

We have ceiling hung pulleymaid in small utility along with washer, dryer and fridge/freezer. It's surprisingly effective and hoists up out of the way

We usually dry washing outside, but have a pulley on the ceiling in our utility, which is unheated, and small items dry well with the window open. Larger items go on a folding rack in a bedroom, where a dehumidifier seems to help dry things quickly. The tumble dryer is hardly ever used, just for emergencies!

I also have a Drysoon from Lakeland. They are very effective and light weight, and as mentioned fold flat for easy storage (except mine is mostly always out with 4 kids at home!)
Being light weight, I often load mine and stick it outside, and if things aren't quite dry by evening, I bring it in and plug it in.
