Help with my kitchen floor

We opened up our kitchen by taking out the old pantry and taking out what was the old back door. We now have two different floor types and a section which is filled with a very sandy mix of concrete. I actually have grown to love the polished concrete and the terrazzo which I think is resin based. We have had a quote to polish up and enhance the original colour but they say they can't do anything about the area where we removed the walls.

Every one else keeps asking me what I am going to put down on the floor. Trouble is that most floor coverings such as Karndean or Amtico would involve putting down leveling compound which will completely ruin the original floor.

Does anyone know of a company which could repair the original floor or alternatively offer suggestions on how to achieve a stylish solution?

Hi, this is quite a bummer, as the floor should be done before the new kitchen has been fitted. It looks like apart of different materials you also have a slight difference in level too. The only reasonable option here I would say is to cover it with something like tiles or amtico that you like. I also love the polished concrete, especially when it's stained, but in your situation I don't see how this can be done now. I know, I'm not being very helpful here, but please keep us all posted once you manage to resolve it.

You could try cutting the unwanted bits out to a depth suitable for pouring or laying a new terrazzo layer. If using a resin mix, it could be as thin as 6 to 8mm, or if using a tile product, they are usually about 28mm thick. Just ensure that there are no cables or pipes close to the floor surface where you are cutting out. (Fairly inexpensive cable/pipe detectors are available.) If you don't try to match the existing finish, it could be easier to lay a contrasting finish, separated from the existing using a thin metal strip.

What a beautiful and perfect table you found! Hubba hubba - those legs are just gorgeous. Well done and thanks for calling out to me. As for the chair mix, I think four beige and two merlot would be lovely. I think you like a traditional look, so I'm a bit worried that you won't be happy with it. If the table will normally be smaller with four beige chairs around it and maybe put the two merlot ones on either side of the radiator cover/"console", then definitely do the mix. Mismatched chairs around a dining table are often all different or the same make and model in a multitude of colours or the same colour in different styles. Do a Houzz search and see if you can find your planned mix and if you like the look. If in doubt, get four beige and look at them for a while! You could tie the two chair colours together with little cushions on the chairs - maybe just on the two merlot ones. OK, I normally do gardens, but here's my take..... You kitchen is very similar to ours, which we've lived with for a few years now. Based on our experience, I'd move the sink to be opposite the cooker, with dishwasher adjacent and a ready-use plate rack over/adjacent (most people use dishwashers these days, so having the food preparation area by the window is more meaningful). You might also want to think about swapping the sink and cooker sides, since the route for dirty plates is from the dining table to the peninsula, to the dishwasher/sink. The peninsula is too narrow - this is where everything gets "dumped", so more surface area, creeping round the corner, will be much more useful: also, instead of a rounded end, a square end with cutlery drawers etc. would fit with the route of flow from kitchen to table. Agree with Ash that moving the door to the utility would work better - clear route of flow from dining area to the door without going into the more confined kitchen space. If you have an american style fridge-freezer along the bottom wall, say, you might want a second, under-unit fridge near the food prep area, for things you use all the time (thus preserving the traditional "work triangle"). Oh, and make sure you have a little spice cupboard right next to the cooker!

If you want a more integrated country look, have your kitchen professionally spray painted in a pale grey or white after rehanging the wall units so that they are all level. Replace the light pelmet to something plainer. The worktop around the sink has gone quite dark from the constant presence of water. Consider having all the tops replaced with oak to coordinate with your floor. Wood knobs or pewter handles will complete the cabinetry. Remove the tiles and replace with patchwork tiles to give you more colour. Hi Getty Welty What a shame about the worktop but I think it's almost a blessing in disguise. Once you have settled on the worktop my advice would be to take samples of the cupboards & worktop to a tile shop and look at them altogether. You really need to see a large tile together with the other samples to appreciate the overall look. A 10 x 10 sample is only a representation of the whole tile and the colour changes on a larger scale. Confused as to why you would be at all worried about the original floor, if you know you can't keep it, then pick a floor that you do like, level it off and lay it,. You're not going to see it again, no point being sentimental, it's not useable now that it has bare patches.

Black Oak Builders is right. Usually the floor would be completed before the kitchen, however anything's possible in this day and age!

It's hard to tell by your photo what level of work would be required, however if you're looking to match the terrazzo floor, that's no problem. We've actually recently matched the London Coliseum's cracked terrazzo floor (see photo - they sent us a tiny sample to match).

Of course it depends on your favoured finish, but terrazzo is a great, durable option which is making huge waves in the interiors world currently.
