small narrow hallway help
Need some help with our hallway. I was thinking of putting a mirror above the radiator to open the space up... also wondering what else I can put on the shelf to decorate it! does anybody have any light fitting recommendations? my style is very neutral, glamour with a bit of Scandinavian influence. thanks in advance!

8 years agoHi Laura, How about adding in a pendant ceiling light like this one as not sure what colour scheme you are planning for the walls and white will match everything :-)

Comments (8)Hi There, Lighting is so important so it would be a great idea to consider using table lamps in different corners if you have available plug sockets. Mirrored or glass lighting as pendant shades would also give off more light and reflection to brighten up your hallway. I would also consider your colour palette. As Tom suggested a bright White or light colour and painting the woodwork would lift the whole space. You could also add some metallic, silver, gold and glass accessories to brighten up the hallway. Comments (19)I would add colour, perhaps change the floor depending on budget and add some nice storage where you hang your clothes rather than leave it open. You can have some kind of console under the stairs with lighting and a round mirror to make the place look spacious and perhaps small pendants , 3 or so, along the corridor. Definitely looks like it needs brightening up and lighting is key. However of course it depends on what you doing with the rest of the house, for example you could even change the stairs and have a nice runner . Comments (8)I’ve fairly recently moved to using Mylands Marble Matt emulsion. It’s a similar price to Farrow and Ball (maybe a tad more), but is bomb prove and scrubbable. 5 litres retails at £91, but I’ve discovered that Paint Depot online sell for £81 and also usually have a 10% off offer. When I bought from them, the paint was shipped direct from Mylands... Dulux Trade diamond Matt is their really tough version - I found it to be cheaper than the Mylands if going for white or magnolia. However not massively cheaper when you start mixing colours....See More

maybe introduce a little color in artwork and rug, these are just examples, very casual and cheerful, to give you some ideas. Art print from Not on the Highstreet, mirrors and rugs from ikea. I prefer a large, round mirror over the shoe cabinet. Good contrast :)

I think a pendant light could be lovely.. What about a Fiorella light by Nigel Coates for Slamp available at his site. www.nigelcoates.com. It's rather lovely and has a family of other lighting options to go with.. Table lamps in two sizes and also wall light... You could paint the inside of the front door to give it some depth and think of interesting textures perhaps on the artwork idea.. See below.. For colours I thought earthy tones such as those in the canvas could work beautifully with a natural rug and you can layer these colours as you like from the pale in the sky to the earth colours to create the neutral glamour/Scandinavian you like...

A lovely convex oval mirror such as this one would be nice over the shoe storage..
A runner like this Jute Stockholm from nuLOOM is rather lovely..

I like the mirror that mefor suggested. I've often drooled a little bit seeing it in IKEA, but I don't need a mirror unfortunately.
So I'll go with that suggestion. And I found thisfab lamp, that is really large, makes a statement, but is not too 'in your face' and under a £100. A striped runner, stripes running width-wise, from Next.
If you can paint the front door charcoal or black, that would be nice.

8 years agoHi. If you want to keep with the grey and white then I'd add texture.
The mirror is from graham and green and the goose feather shade is from not on the high street. Re the shade it may restrict light though... For the cabinet I'd go for a vase of stems something like pussy willow for texture and make them tall against the mirror. Perhaps also swap the heart for a lovely long tassel on that door

i think a round mirror would look great above your radiator something like the one's below that are fairly neutral but will still make a great impact.
For the lighting have you considered something like a globe chandelier they offer a modern take on the traditional chandelier.
