what type of glaze is this? Who is the manufacturer of the glass?

Hi. Building control in Brighton has just declined to approve the same box even using the best glazing structure in the market. Which glaze did they use? Who manufactured this glaze?

Hi Carl, the glass used was as follows.

8mm toughened Low E ( energy ) HST Glass ( heat soaked tested ) with a 22mm spacer bar ( ie the gap between the glass ) and 10.8mm laminated glass. Total thickness 43.6mm, All silicone sealed units. This applied to the roof, windows and doors.

Hi Cynthia 1. agreed ... although I would just raise the small concern that this will be a large master bedroom which we hope will be impressive and attractive on any future sale. Therefore we would like to avoid as far as possible, anything which makes one end of the room look a bit unusual (i.e. one obscured window not matching other clear windows). I am hoping we can come up with some internal (or possibly even external) design idea to mitigate the actual difference in window glass. One idea has been to use folding plantation shutters for example and to have the top 1/3 of windows (above the 1.7m threshold) as openable. However given the windows are dormer, the top 1/3 has the sloping roof, so cannot fit in plantation shutters around the top 1/3. 2. agreed again ... but again for future use by other occupants, it may seem strange to have a room with only obscured glass (or at least the main window pane up to 1.7m). Wondering if there are any design ideas which can make it look more like a normal room even though 3/4 of the window pane will be obscured. 3. that could be possible, I was thinking it would be a problem since the size matched (as usually I've seen the staircase window when stained glass being of a totally independent size and shape and therefore one does not even expect it to match, as it is unique in every way). However, here it is not only the same size and shape but also part of a horizontal row of windows, so I would think maybe the eye would expect matching styles across the plane? Would love to see a photo of exterior of a house where one of the windows in a row of similar sized windows is stained, if anyone can share? 4. The last window will continue to have regular glass as is it part of existing (pre-renovation) house and in any case (although difficult to see from drawing) set back from the 3 new windows by about 2m (you can see a flat roof in front of it). Therefore less of a need to imagine it would match as it is on a slightly different plane to the other three. Will definitely consider Solatubes for the study room ... hoping this is not another planning authority approval issue!

I know you are all right about using the front room as a bedroom but If I keep the reception room as the main living area, I am finding it difficult to visualise the furniture layout as the shape of the room is odd with a fire place and 2 little windows on the outside wall. The original tiles have been taken from the fireplace so its horrible. The room goes really far back and I am unsure of where I can put the TV for the kids. The bi folding doors on the left are modern and also horrible. I would like to replace them but I am not sure what would be in keeping with a 1930s house.fireplace Bifolding doors i wish to replace with something more period Back of same room Help!

Interesting article Melissa, although I think you need to put some numbers in to provide more facts... Costs for triple glazing are regularly twice the cost of double glazing, but as it becomes more common, costs can be a little as from 20 to 40% more compared to double glazed windows. In the UK, it is generally considered not cold enough (certainly not all year round) to make the savings on heating worth the extra cost. The estimate in annual savings is only £20 - £40, so it would take years (decades even!) to make the heating bill savings pay back. The life of the windows would perhaps be shorter! To give an example, if it cost £5000 to double glaze a house, then triple glazing would be £6000 - £7000 (at 20 - 40% more) so at the lowest cost (£6000) and highest savings of £40/year, it would take 25 years to make the savings back! The insulation improvements in terms of U-values: triple can be as low as 0.5 W/m²k (although typically 0.8 W/m²k ), double typically 1.2 to 1.6 W/m²k and single 5.0 W/m²k. As you pointed out, the frames also need to be insulated (thermally broken) to save energy successfully. Frame profiles with more compartments offer the best insulation. Our Residence Collection R9 uPVC windows for instance have nine compartments to protect against heat loss. Other steps can be taken to improve the energy ratings though... Double glazing can be greatly improved to provide better insulation with the addition of special coatings or layers on the glass. As you pointed out, using Krypton gas instead of Argon between the panes will also help, although this does come at a higher price - our Crittall windows come with Krypton gas between the panes. Adding integral blinds between the glass panes can also help improve U-values and gives a very practical and dust-free blind solution to provide privacy and shade when required. The noise reduction in triple glazing will only be properly effective if the gaps between the glazing or the glass thickness for each pane is different so that sound waves of different wavelengths get blocked. Nearly every triple glazed unit available is uniform in glass thickness and have equidistant space between panels, so noise reduction is not as effective as it could be. Having one of the panels of glass laminated (6.8mm thick) and others standard 4mm or 6mm will help reduce noise considerably and this can be achieved just with double glazing quite effectively - thus the extra cost of triple glazing for noise reduction purposes is probably not worth it. Note also that the building’s envelope system plays a crucial role with acoustic performance, making proper installation critical to ensure any sound proof glazing is effective. Special acoustic glass can be specified in double or triple glazed units, which can be highly effective in noise reduction. Be sure to ask your window installer for options such as acoustic glazing if say you live near a busy or noisy road or perhaps an airport. Saint-Gobain, one of our glass suppliers, produce Stadip Silence which offers beautifully transparent noise control glazing. Hopefully, I didn't put you all off triple glazing, it certainly has its place. With a Passivhaus system, that has properly insulated building materials and can utilise large windows strategically placed to naturally warm a house with solar gain, there is sense in the investment. (Larger windows would need to be better insulated.) Triple glazing however, actually slightly reduces the absorption of heat from the Sun, so it's a weigh off game again of cost versus actual benefits. The British weather may not be sunny enough though to make such housing or viable solar gain practical anyway :-( It's a great talking point though Melissa and hopefully means people will look at all their options before making any window purchases. crittal is the original classic slip profile, they have a long history. most aluminium window suppliers buy in profiles and manufacture the windows. the glazing unit needs to be well made from a good source as it is this that provides the u value. as long as the thermal break is manufactured correctly and the the windows are ideally internally beaded or if externally beaded has a security lock to prevent the glass being removed. they are generally branded " secured by design".
