Hi,

This is my living room, currently in the middle of being redone so please ignore the framed picture as won't be staying. I'm going for the kind of look you see in a modern Victorian terrace though I don't live in one! I want a light, airy slightly formal but welcoming feel. The walls are to be painted pale grey which is slightly blue based and I want most of the room to be grey. There's plenty of brown wood in the room to keep the room warm. There will be the odd touch of soft green and blue here and there.

My question is - here I have a roman blind on my back door which is patterned a soft green with white - it's just been made so can't be changed - but I don't know what to do with the windows next to it. I originally wanted venetian blinds in a light colour but don't think they really fit in with the vibe I want. Would roller blinds be better? Or perhaps just used roman blinds on these as well?
Then there is the question of colour - would it be too much to have them in the same fabric as the one on the door? Should I just pick out plain fabric in that same soft green or go for some other colour, perhaps grey?

A friend has just suggested curtains?? I just don't think that would look very elegant??

Considering all of the upcoming changes you mentioned and the fact that you can't change the Roman blinder on the door, yes, in my opinion it would be too much to add similar blinders in terms of colour on the windows. The door is also seems quite a statement. I would suggest to wait until you change the colour of the walls and take it from there. But if you really need to cover the windows as then I would recommend something very neutral such as a variant of white or linen bright grey. Again it depends on the dynamic of the whole room and you don't want to make it too stuffy.

Hello Spacie1977, I think you could make this fabulous!!!.. Where boxing in is necessary I think it's a must.. Why not look at adding on to the kitchen in some way to what is in place if it's sound and solid, if needing permission it's a great way to approach the subject by letting on that you want to conserve! .. .. Possibly extend where needed and perhaps you could replace the cabinet doors?... Painted cabinetry can give a completely different feel.. With the red flooring it may be fantastic to have matt or eggshell charcoal cabinets... You could replace the hob easily enough.. Paint the rads to whatever colour that portion of the wall is.. If you removed the tile you could either panel or paint.. Perhaps take that line a little lower to about dado height.. NB you don't need to add a dado to finish the paint work.. Just make sure the lines are really straight! There are actually many ways you could approach this... Keep a few of the rustic charms... Maybe you want to paint every other floor tile to make it a chequered floor.. Easier than replacing... Maybe you want a two tone kitchen... Looks brilliant and everything can be treated including tall cabinets... Brass cup handles and other fantastic fittings can take a boring cupboard and make it wonderful.. Matt paint or an eggshell. Perhaps half and half... Think Plain English! Or deVOL Also consider 1 colour as this can also have a striking effect on a kitchen... Rub the worktop with fine wire wool and then sand lightly and oil... Paint the french doors to stand out... Here's a few pics for inspiration to illustrate a few suggestions I made... Also consider window frames, skirting and all other woodwork which can be bold and exciting.. They don't have to be white.. The other things are accessories... Piles of wooden chopping boards.. Shiny brassy taps... How you display your crockery... All these things can add warmth and finish : ))

I think you'll have to go with white or whatever looks best indoors in those rooms. You can always think about getting the windows colour bonded at some point instead of replacing them. Then you can choose any colour for those inside and out! You can paint UPVC yourself - All of our windows inside are painted the same colour as the walls in those rooms so that the windows blend into the walls. They were dark brown / mahogany ( vile ) - Outside they are all sage green. If you're going to paint the frames inside which will brighten the rooms and let you have whatever colour shutters you like, use Zinsser 1-2-3 primer and then paint away.

Hi there! You can put the dining table next to the kitchen door, which would help you organise the space and fit for purpose. I personally prefer a round table as that gives you a little more space. For the living room the armchair must be small, we do not want the space to appear narrower. You can enclose the space with an ottoman, to have a complete living room. I recommend that you put the sofa facing the kitchen door, that way you have an integrated space. Here's a little sketch to illustrate what I mean.
