Light or dark patio doors?

I have a grey green painted kitchen like this

and pale walls, currently Slipper Satin but soon to be Shaded White. The worktops are oak with white matt metro tiles. The floor is pale stone effect vinyl. All in all, quite neutral, perhaps a bit too neutral....

I'm getting new patio doors/French windows and am wondering if I should paint them dark for a bit of contrast? Like this

Or perhaps the same colour as the units to get this kind of look

The house is Victorian, but the kitchen is an extension so seems much more modern with no period details other than the original chimney breast.

If so does anyone have any suggestions for a good colour to use? Not sure I fancy full on black....

Pale doors/windows will probably bring more warmth to the room, whereas dark will be more of a contrast. It entirely depends what kind of look you're after but for a statement, I'd go for dark!

Thanks, am a bit undecided as I'd like the kitchen to be cosy more than anything else. I do think dark would give some wow factor....

The reason that you're dad is telling you this is because of the sizes of the doors. Each door will be less than 3ft wide, and ordinary sliding doors do not slide back completely behind the other, therefore, the gap that you walk through to get outside will be impeeded, probably by around 10-12 inches. When you take into consideration the width of the frame on both sides, your gap will be tiny, i'm hazzarding a guess at somewhere in the realm of 20-24 inches. Of course it is possible, you can have them whatever size you like. Just ask the window company what gap you'll be left with to walk through ! Other sliding doors ( the expensive ones ) - push out then slide over, making your gap larger. If you can afford it, then bi-folds will work, other than that two lovely large patio doors that open out mounted toward the outer edge of the building so that they fold as flat a possible agains the outside walls. We put these on one of our builds, and it's fabulously light and airy inside and the doors open a long way out and back These are the sort that you mean, and we have put them on builds, but you end up having to turn slightly sideways to go through them because of the diminished gap!

Hi Pauline, We think a subtle grey shade would work well in your space, helping to break up the cream and brown while playing off the duck egg blue. Hi Sarah, I had a window turned into a sliding patio door but it was in 1988 so the £800 I paid has probably increased somewhat! The fitter cut through the bricks to accommodate the new patio door. All quite straightforward. However, about 4 years ago the patio door had seen better days so we had it replaced in upvc by Globe Home Improvements who are in Beds! The owner, Phil Bush, was so nice and you know he cared. Great after care too. Family run business. Our replacement sliding doors are just under 2m wide and cost £1700. They have a website and Facebook page if you want to read the reviews and look at their windows and doors.

Hi, We are in the process of constructing a large garden cabin for a customer which is to be clad in vertically fixed Canadian Cedar. If you have deep pockets this would look modern and easy on the eye + gives a nod to the cladding you already have on the house.

I'd go for paler colours then - white or cream will bring warmth! The finishing touches really do make all the different, don't they?
