Vaulted bedroom ceiling

Has anyone done this in there average joe blogs home?
I have seen many beautiful examples, but these tend to be huge ! Or attic bedrooms.
My two story Edwardian semi has lovely pitched roofs. The house is made up of three sections, with three pitches.
None of which have attic conversions just a hatch into one section.
The one above master bedroom seems suited to a vaulted ceiling. The room 3.5x4.5m has chimney and fireplace running through one wall, large window below the apex.
The space above has joists running across- do these have to remain?
Has anyone done this in there home?
Do you think would look good in a normal family home?
Any thoughts or ideas.
