Need help with my sitting/ living room please

Sitting room is tired
I need to reupholster my sofa, paint walls, do floor etc but furniture is mahogany-dark but I don't know what colours would brighten it up, also got teenage boys and a dog who can open door so we can't keep her out and she likes sofas but does not shed hairs -any help would be appreciated

Hi I would paint the walls in a pale grey and all the architrave and the fireplace in white. Get some neutral throws for your sofa and chairs which can also be used when you recover, to protect as easy to throw in the washer. Add an accent colour with some new cushions. I have included a couple of pictures so you can see how this scheme works well with dark furniture. It will immediately lift the room. Pier point from Fired Earth is a lovely warm grey

Hi,

We have some great advice on brightening rooms and colour schemes.

As we can see from the photos you already have quite a neutral room colour, although the red may be darkening the room a little with the contrast of the dark furniture. How about lightening the room by getting rid of the red wall feature and carrying on with the neutral theme. Also by using lighter accessories (cream curtains) this will lighten your room.

If you want to add more colour we suggest doing this through the use of accessories such as cushions and throws.

A Crew of Two - Thanks for your thoughts. Excellent point about the sofas. I'll have a move around later and then re-photograph. Re the coffee table. I'm not keen on rattan. I think you are right I'd best source a rug locally. Perhaps it's a good idea for me to choose my ottoman/coffee table first as the one above might get entirely lost on a cream/beige rug. Perhaps a hazlenut sisal would work better in that respect. I like the texture of sisal.

Hi. It's quite difficult to work out the whole room from the pics and exactly what your style is. If the room can take it I'd go for a mid tone grey on the walls so there isn't as much contrast with the sofas but if not a pale but warm grey. Swap the rug for something plain but with texture so a natural coloured sisal for instance so it doesn't make the room feel smaller with such a contrast between rug and floor. I'd use orange as the accent colour so maybe grey patterned curtains with orange cushions and additional artwork. It may also be worth considering blinds rather than curtains to give the sofa some space. I would also pick another colour like green or teal etc to liven it up for just a couple of accessories. Use a mixture of textured and patterned cushions. put something in the middle of the dining table be it a plant or flowers or vase etc. also consider the lighting as table and floor lamps will add a cosy feel. Can you move the dining table so it's central under the light and add a feature pendant (maybe with some orange!)? The existing art looks as if it is hung a little high so would rehang a few inches lower and align over the sofa. Is it a table in front of the tv? Can that be moved in front of the sofa and accessorised? A plant and a couple of piles of books are cheap accessories! Is there anyway to move the furniture to cover the ŵall sockets or maybe disguise with a potted plant?

Thank you all very much for your suggestions. The fireplace is basically to create a focal point in the room. I can't have a real fire or gas fire as there is no chimney. So the plan is to have an electric fire with dummy chimney breast. Marcin, Thank you for your comment. I agree with you I don't like the curtains either. We inherited them from the previous owners. So they definitely need changing. I'll be grateful to see a 3D model. Where is your email?

Thank you for advice, this is my first time to use the site so I am a bit surprised how you all answered so quick - I had a quick look at you advice and am going to have a better look at weekend , that's problem with working too tired to do all things I'd like to do- Tks again
