What kind of wood is used on the exterior and how is it treated?

Thanks for your enquiry. The exterior cladding is untreated FSC Scottish larch which silvers with age. Take a look at ourinteriors and exteriors page for more cladding info and options.

Annabel, I wouldn't paint something like window frames in a colour that's trendy at the moment. You're probably not going to do it again in 5 years and if not, they could look dated. However, if that's what you like... there are lots of nice greys out there - any paint shop has them at the moment, as they are so fashionable. Farrow&Ball has quite a few nice ones, e.g: http://www.farrow-ball.com/brassica/colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100271 For your house though... I think either a green or a smoked blue or purple could look great (and you could become a trendsetter in your neighbourhood). A neighbour has had her front door and frames done in Farrow&Ball Ball Green - she told me she had people knocking her door to ask the paint colour (I can take a photo tomorrow if you want to see it directly). One colour I played with was Amethyst by Fired Earth - they have great stuff; also look at their National Trust collection - some are really inspiring. From experience, you're better off ordering their paint online, as often you can't find the shade you need in shops that carry Fired Earth stuff. http://www.firedearth.com/paint/colour/reds-pinks-purples/amethyst Dulux Pressed Thistle is a great blue-grey, although I'm not sure if they sell it as exterior wood paint. I bought Dulux Chic Shadow two weeks ago and love it. And to convince you (I hope!) that purple is great for windows and doors, have a look at my own place - we even did the pergola in it :)) What I used is Cuprinol Lavender (http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/cuprinol-garden-shades---lavender---25l-030486) as a last coat, the wood has had grey undercoat & primer and proper exterior paint underneath, as Cuprinol is not that long lasting, but I loved the colour and couldn't get it anywhere else so I used it against my decorator's advice (it still looks great after 2 years!) What type and treatment for exterior timber cladding

I have a real dilemma choosing cladding for my extension. I only intend to clad a small area to break up the off-white render. I don't want orange coloured wood. I want to keep it as natural as possible but I'm not sure the fade to grey would suit the North facing aspect. Sustainability is important - not keen on too many chemicals - any ideas would be very welcome. Thank you

They look like pine to me - but my eyesight is shocking! I like painted boards - and if these are pine, they should be fine to paint. You would still need to do a bit of work before painting, such as sanding, repairing any damaged bugs, nailing down any loose bits ... Good luck - let us know what you decide!
