Ideas needed for layout of kitchen diner

We're updating our kitchen/diner at the planning stage. We thought we would move the kitchen to the current dining area and move the dining area into the kitchen to give us a bit more space as the dining area is bigger than the current kitchen. Any ideas gratefully accepted on how the kitchen should be laid out and where we could put the desk and table etc gratefully accepted.

Hi. I would agree with you on swapping the too rooms around, it would make much more sense!

We did this in our 30s semi. But we had the for from the hallway going into the new dining area by where your fridge freezer is now, then we blocked the door into the old dining room, had a run of units along that wall and the wall where your fireplace is. We had the chimney breast opened and a range cooker put in it, a larder cupboard in the alcove to the right, and an island with pan drawers in front of the cooker

I would suggest utility /noisy items go in a utility / laundry room in the small area by door into garage ... Then add a kitchen and living eating area in the rest of the space . If your kitchen is 2.8m wide, with a 60cm island and 60cm kitchen worktops, you'll have 160cm left, or 80cm each side. That's a bit small. 1m would be better. Can you extend out by another 40cm (20cm either side of the island)? If not, worktops on the opposite side might be more practical. Other than that, I feel that freezers belong in the kitchen. You'll certainly have the space for it.

Hi Carol, If you're happy with a more informal dining area, banquet seating would work well off the end of the kitchen units. On the left side you could have low units or tall units running up to the banquet seating. Here's a couple of inspiration images. On the right side of the kitchen could be tall units. You can add a pantry or even build in a cupboard for coats etc accessed from the hall. What is currently the ensuite could potentially be turned into a small utility area for washer/dryer as the plumbing is already there. The kitchen is nice & long and would give you plenty of worktop space despite being narrow. You could also leave part of the wall up but fit glass doors/sliders (or just have an opening) which creates separation but still has an open plan feel when you want it open.

Hi Tilly, I wanted to draw attention to the living room sofa's vicinity to the bi-fold. You'll be doing a side-shuffle to access the handle to open it up. An additional comment is the side access to your utility space, from the seating area. It is a design and navigational flow detail that may seem superfluous but if you have the space in the utility room to revise this, I would suggest to have access through the kitchen i.e a full length kitchen cabinet that opens to reveal access to the utility room. You also need to think about plumbing. our sink and dishwasher are along the wall opposite the windows, but it was a suspended floor with a large gap and a clear run for the water pipes out and under the floor of the hall to the garage where the mains water and drainage is. There was already a gas supply to the fireplace but we renewed the pipe for the cooker

Seems like quite a lot of upheaval for not a huge gain in space.

Could the two spaces be made to work better where they are? You could add base units to create a u shaped kitchen giving you more storage and a serving area (you could have shelves on the dining room side holding eg cookbooks, placemats, napkins etc)

Bringing the range cooker forward in line with the units (building out the wall behind) would flow better too.

Could the desk go elsewhere? I think this would make the dining space more inviting.

I think its nicer to have a dining area looking out and opening into a garden than a cooking area. Also you lose worktop space to the patio doors, rather than a window above the sink, as I presume you have now?
