Is it ok not to have splashback in cloakroom?

Is it ok not to have tiling behind the sink in a cloakroom? I am currently redecorating my downstairs toilet and have not planned to have a splashback, such as the picture below. Will this be an issue? The paint will be Dulux endurance eggshell which is washable....

In our minute cloakroom we wallpapered behind the basin, and went right up over the sloping ceiling and back down behind the lavatory, and varnished the gap to the mirror. Just one width of paper so a rather nice plain border effect.

I had a bit of a naff splashback which I removed when I moved in and painted. Haven't had any issues at all with water splashing so I haven't even needed to wipe the paint but it is quite a deep sink and fairly wide. Are you going for one similar to shown?

I would have thought you'll be fine. Very worst comes to worst you could always add a splash back in at a later time if you find it to be a problem.

Hi Katy, Do you want to go neutral or keep it bold? I would definitely not use carpet on the floor. Much prefer porcelain, as maintenance and looks are a lot better. To match your shower tiles, you could maybe go for dark flooring (black) and beige walls. In which case you could replace your skirting by a tiled one, and get yourself a white toilet seat. Love this flooring + I love the Black finishes! Too add to the black tap you really need black accessories - try Bathroom Origins https://bathroomorigins.co.uk/product-tag/black/page/2/ Black framed mirror would look stunning too. Now, tiles! :P My advice! Find a nice paint you like - I think Farrow + Ball Elaphants Breath, something along those lines. Then find a Metro 300 x 100 in a similar colour to be used as the boxing on the cistern and a 2 tile high splash back behind the wc and basin. Paint the rest of the walls elephants breath/whatever you like! The sink is slightly deeper and more square but it is about the same size as the picture.

Maybe I will just try it! I guess it can only stain the paint not do any real damage.

Hi there, I have the same in my kitchen. No splashback (it's a kitchen peninsula, but the sink is next to the wall), but washable paint and I haven't had a problem at all. And there have been quite a few stain situations...

I loathe tiled splash backs so I'm with you all the way. You will find you and your visitors splatter water and soap around but if you are prepared to give it a gentle wipe every time you use it, why not go without. It's what I do. If you find it doesn't suit you after all, you could wallpaper the room and paint the section above the basin with clear yacht varnish. I did that in a bathroom - painted a section all the way along the side and the end of the bath that was up against a wall, and along the back of the wall behind the basin. It was a tip from an interior designer friend and it worked. It has a slight sheen but solved the problem for me.

I was having this debate with myself right now (having our cloakroom redone next week). Can't find tiles that work so now I'm definitely going without. However I'm also using a very dark colour like the photo; not sure if using a light colour would be detrimental in anyway.

I find the splashes show up more on stronger colours - I've used a reddish brick colour on my shower room walls. It was worse before I installed a water softener - the scale showed up; now the splashes that I see are toothpaste (sorry!). A quick wipe with a damp cloth and it's gone.

Like Joanna I used varnish and it works a treat. Only hand washing in a cloakroom, so splashing minimal.

laurz84 I renovated my main bathroom almost 10 years ago and couldn't find anything that looked right for the splashback so I left it and it's been fine. I used Dulux bathroom paint as the shower is in the same space and it still looks as good as the day it was painted. In fact, I had a painter/decorator have a look around recently to see what needed repainting and she said that it was good as new and she wouldn't have guessed it was that old. An occasional wipe and it's fine. I'm tempted to to the same when I re-do the kitchen.

You could try a small piece of glass that is unobtrusive as will allow the wall colour to shine through but protect the surface - many kitchen's are featuring this idea behind cookers.

I have used a Polyvine antibacterial decorator's varnish (Matt) on my splash back which to date us completely wipeable & nothing seems to stain it.
If using on very dark paint it can look slightly opaque so I now mix it with the paint which seems to give the same resilience (1/4 varnish to 3/4 paint) but worth testing according to which paint brand you use.

Crikey, you're brave! Like you, I hate splashbacks but you could spoil a beautiful cloakroom for the want of something: I have used a couple of mirror tiles as a compromise but then, if varnish or waterproof paint stands the test of time, go for it!

If we can't find a vinyl wallpaper for a project in a wet area or we wish to preserve a decorative paint technique like dragging, we paint over the walls with a thinned solution of PVA. This gives the surface a sheen that can be scrubbed. If you don't want a sheen, your decorators' merchant will sell a protective glaze in a matt finish.

The same decorators varnish mentioned before is perfect for wall paper...I used it on the wallpaper featured in this picture...completely washable!

I had my kitchen painted 3 years ago and kept meaning to tile behind the cooker . But the wall is still like new , the washable paint is great so real need for a splashback . It should be fine !

You could have a piece of glass cut to measure with screw holes pre-drilled and use mirror screws to put it up. It'll look good and clean easily but show the paint colour.

If you use glass make sure you seal along basin edge, otherwise water can creep up.

I never, or should I say my husband, hasn't, got round to finish tiling behind the wash basin so we used a 'washable wallpaper' and it drives me mad everyday. It never ceases to surprise me how much toothpaste, soap etc gets splashed against the wall and no matter how much I wipe it, it always leaves little marks which are impossible to get off without damaging the surface. If I could, I would tile every last inch of the bathroom. A quick spray and wipe and it always looks clean. I feel like I'm doing an indepth scrub constantly and it still never looks quite as pristine as I would like

This is just a downstairs toilet so should just be hand washing...hoping the odd water splash won't be an issue

We have gone with no splashback a couple of times. Agree that darker colours show more mess but it's a small price to pay. Looks great!!

The blue is Dulux Azure Fusion 1.....it's a dupe for Farrow and Ball Hague Blue. I wanted a washable vinyl type paint and this is Dulux Trade Eggshell. It was difficult to work with though, definitely tested my patience.

The wood was just from b&q, just a random find one day. Originally it was going to be scaffold board but the bark edged wood won out.
