Emergency home office help needed!! All hands on deck!
Comments (64)I too work from home. The change took some to adjust to. Early on it was novel and I was smug that my 'commute' was only 15 seconds - bedroom to office. Over time I found I was not working so well as I was in an 'at home' frame of mind. I combated that to some extent as follows: 1. Paint it to look and feel like an office - if not you gradually feel to much like you are at home and work suffers. 2. Layout has to be practical first, looks count second. I see your desk and I think you are like me. Filing can be an issue. It is easy to end up with a desk buried under a foot of papers and that impacts your work and your mind. Have plenty of filing space - cabinets and/or shelving and ensure a fair amount of it is within a pace of your desk. Working from home means you will need to do most of the taking out and putting away, even if you do have an occasional assistant. Being able to do that within a simple turn from your chair means you can keep doing it. Once it is a chore to do, then suddenly it all piles up. 3. Going to work in the morning - get up, walk out and then come back in to the office. It may sound strange but as a habit you then feel you are at work. I used to stumble down the stairs and into the office and then work didn't really happen properly - I wasn't in an 'at work' frame of mind. Commuting to work is a pain but it actually makes that distinction - I am now at work. For me, making sure I am dressed suitably to go to the gate and back helps with that frame of mind. 4. Lighting - again, make it like at office - bright enough and no shadows. 5. IT equipment. Make sure it has enough space. There is nothing as infuriating as fighting with a printer in a tight shelving unit when the inevitable paper jam/toner change crops up as you are rushing to complete something. Again, working from home means you will be in charge of all this too, so get it all installed correctly so that it all works without too much effort from you. Your time is better spent in your primary role, so IT needs to be there for you, not you for it. 6. Drinks etc. For me I keep all that in the kitchen. This saves space and also makes me get up and stretch my legs from time to time. I don't have any young children anymore so there is no problem going and getting a drink - no break in the 'at work' mode. If you have young children at home this point may not work for you. 7. Make sure family and friends understand that you are at work and not simply at home. There is a tendency for them to think you are at home and that they can thus disturb you any time. Working at home means flexibility but also lost time from distractions if not done carefully. Good luck with your new venture. Onwards and upwards!...See MoreHow to finish this room?
Comments (146)Having looked through this post, I have to say I love the way that this project has progressed so far. The dark purpleyblue used in your lights would be lovely for a splash of color perhaps paired with a softer pale blue. Some great pillows that would go in this way include a soft of aubergine and eggplant shade. (As demonstrated by the drape examples here). Good luck I look forward to seeing where your project takes you next as it looks a lovely peaceful room. :)...See MoreHome layout dilema after plans approved for extension into barn
Comments (28)Hi Minnie, Thanks for this. You've had some serious thought into my predicament. There is a scale on the drawing but for you its approx 12m x 5.8 (external of the barn unit excluding 'link) but walls are quite thick. I do like your idea and think modern living, which i like tends to focus round a kitchen dining living space which doing what you say would achieve. I think I'm going to have to sketch up your ideas too and see which would practically be the better choice. We've probably spent most of our time obsessing over a really nice master, when actually you spend little time in it... well little time awake. so does it need to be so big. Id hoped to actually create a similar kitchen dining experience by removing the wall between the kitchen and living room to crate a bigger room. This would enable a small island and allow space for a dining table in the current front room and replacing the windows on the kitchen facing the garden with a more modern 'letterbox' picture postcard window to draw in the view. It was also my concern that creating this kitchen / dining in the barn would negate the need to use the original house as all family time would realistically be spend on the ground foor of the barn / bedrooms above. For what essentially is a compromise to what we had originally submitted to planning, i don't want to create anything that means the house becomes the subordinate or poorer relation to the new. It should flow and be part of the whole. I think if we went with the kitchen in barn (as awesome as it would be) wed just may as well not build the link and make a separate house minus your boot room of course. This would maximise our investment but I'm not a developer, Money is not the driver....See MoreMy visit to Wren. Opinions welcome...
Comments (43)We've ordered a Wren Kitchen (Milano too) and so far so good for us. I love the design we've come up with together, they've been more responsive than the smaller local companies we spoke with, and more creative than the Howden's plan we had. We got quotes from 4 companies - handle-less kitchens were dearer than shaker etc in all. Wren have a 'list price', and a price that they say is the 'discounted' price which is the one they offer customers. Discounted is closer to the actual price, but you can still negotiate - they have the space to move. I hate that they do the whole 'this price will be held for 24hrs' routine (ugh! I wish they'd cut that out.), however they will price match if you get a better quote for a similar kitchen elsewhere. Initially their designs were fine, but nothing startling, but with a bit of thought and a moving things around we've got something really creative. We've had 4 x 2hr slots with our designer to get to a point where we're proper excited about our plans. They're also had a surveyor come round to measure up. We are using our own fitter - he's someone who's done a lot of work locally on friends kitchens so we've seen the quality of his work. When I was seeking advice on the quality of Wren kitchens v others from him, he said they are as good quality as any, and kitchen issues are usually a result of a bad fitter rather than a bad product. Our fitter will be meeting with our designer over the next couple of weeks to run through everything with them. Trust Pilot reviews for Wren are good (8/10), and they've won 'kitchen designer of the year' or something similar from one of the interiors magazines recently (sorry I can't remember which mag!). It seems that the main issue with them is their post-sales customer service when things go wrong so we'll see how it goes and report back. Colleen your update has prompted us to check our measurements again with our fitter. If you're keen on the Wren kitchen I'd say trawl through the Photos section on Houzz and see if there's anything that takes your fancy in there, then see the designer again and play with the plan. I LOVE Wren's midway shelving (thin shelves which sit under the wall units). I'm getting those, with lockers instead of traditional wall cupboards. It's rotten to hear of any bad experiences though - it always feels like a gamble when you're spending thousands on your dream kitchen....See More4christine75
