Help with layout for living room needed / blank canvas

Hi All, I'd appreciate if you could help me with my dilemmas. We've moved in to our new house recently and starting with decorations now! First to tackle will be the living room. It's a south facing room, overall 4.8 x 3.6m. I've attached a picture of our new sofa - the grey one - it's 205cm long and 103cm deep. Where would you place it? We don't have any other furniture just yet. I was initially thinking to put the tv on a swivel tv bracket in one of the alcoves where the tv points are, however I'm struggling to find a nice tv cabinet to go under! Whichever wall the tv will be hung on will be painted in F&B off black. The rest of the room probably in French or Light Gray. I'm hoping for an elegant look with a little bit of oriental feel. The inside of the fireplace will be rendered and fire surround installed. Any ideas on the furniture layout or décor would be much appreciated! Many thanks.

Hi. I'm not sure if the sofa is going to be best sat opposite the fire as the sofa width is wider than the alcove? I'd put a console behind the sofa to dress with lamps etc. if you have the tv in the larger alcove have you thought about using a console table? Either one with a large single drawer for the sky box (will need a magic eye or whatever they're called plus a hole in the back for leads!) or one with a shelf at the bottom. They seem quite difficult to find in the right size but have found one below. Perhaps a chair facing the sofa kind of angled semi in the alcove with a floor lamp behind . Re oriental feel, oka have quite a few oriental inspired accessories etc so maybe a lamp and a piece of blue and white china. They also do faux hydrangea which would suit your look and some lovely cushions! You could also consider a darker wallpaper in the alcoves similar to pic that will follow just as an idea to add pattern. A French grey would be lovely, just check the undertones with your sofa. I'm not sure if you have the sofa already but try placing paper templates in the room if not.

I love the idea of the duck egg blue and yellow adding a pop of colour to the white. I'd play it up a bit more and go for deep and bold jewel tones of teal, sapphire, plum and burgundy, mixed with a few of the more delicate neutral pillows you have. I think little pops of gold would do nicely with the jewel tones and match the yellow you already have. I'd definitely continue the idea of the sheepskin throw and maybe introduce a similar rug to bring some warmth and texture to the floor -perhaps a warmer beige. I think large black and white photographs of your preference would go nicely on the blank wall -perhaps flanked by some floating bookshelves to showcase any decorations that might bring more warmth and personality to the room.

Hi Sarah. You didn't go for the table/unit then?! What's the light like in the room? Cornforth can be quite cold to my eye. Try that or strong White by F&B. I think mustard accents would be great. I'd have an arc lamp or similar over the sofa. Lamps from homebase and Neofurn (website say light is orange but appears mustard on my screen!). Do you need a tv unit or can you not use the White wall unit or is too high? I don't know how big your sofa is re size of coffee table but I'd combine white and oak (or preferably your sofa leg colour but hard to find). The 1st is from John Lewis, I'd have the coffee and side table as they have. 2nd is Terence Conrad at John Lewis not particularly cheap but also do matching bookcases. I'd maybe think about contemporary chairs either side of the double door but would leave until you're in so you can measure properly.

Hey, Gemma. How's it going? Are you able to post some more pictures of the space, so we can see it from other angles and how it ties to other rooms (especially the kitchen)? Also, forgive me for asking, but where is the current dining table? Your eye is similar to mine in the choices you made and my living/ dining area is similar so I can certainly relate. It's difficult to know where to start because you're lucky enough to have a blank slate. I think all your ideas are good. I know you're changing your sofa which is good as the chaise element blocks the eye's flow to the light/ window. Something with long legs, with 2 seats - possible a loveseat - would also help to minimise the footprint. I agree with the paint colours. I'd probably paint the whole wall, in case you wanted to change things around at some point. It can also be very difficult to pull off, and especially with varying lights. How would you like the split to be between the dining and living areas? In one of your ideabook photos you have the 'zones' approach at 50/50 but I'm not sure if that's something you were going to carry through or whether the dining space would play a less prominent role. All that said, I think all your ideas are spot on and the space promises to look great.

Hi Shelley Your room looks lovely - very light and airy and I love the architectural details! I love using a slightly deeper colour on walls that have exquisite skirting boards and coving - I actually think it looks really good in the colour of the plaster! Alternatively if you want a lighter colour, a warm white or grey would look great too. I've put some pics below of the kind of effect I'm talking about with the slightly darker neutrals. Your best bet is to get some samples and paint them on big sheets of card *not the wall!*, place them in the room on different walls and see what they look like at different times of the day, that should give you a pretty accurate idea of what the whole effect will be once it's all done. Look forward to seeing some photos of the completed project! P.s. I reallly do love that coving...*sigh*

Thank you Minnie. I love the wallpaper and planning to use something very similar in the hallway actually! Thank you for the layout suggestion. Sofa is being delivered in a week..I do like the idea of having a console behind it but worried it will take too much space in the middle of the room. The "south" wall would fit the sofa but it wouldn't probably look as nice. Do you think the attached colour combination would work? I'm really struggling to decide. Magic eye..just googled it..brilliant, skybox problem may be solved. I think I'm getting a console then. I've been eyeing one of the black lacquered ones..I like the Laura Ashley one you've attached but I'm not a fan of combining different wood types. I've also attached a picture of the flooring we bought (will be laid once i decide on wall colours!!)

Looking at it now..It would possibly look odd with sofa being deeper than the alcove. The fire hearth is quite wide too. Will have to test in a week..
