Advice on Door Opening direction - Left or right?

We are renovating a bungalow -so it has no private upstairs. We need to decide on the direction of swing of our kid's bedroom doors:
either
1. opening up so door is against the wall and you see and walk straight into the room.
Saves a lot of space but no privacy unless you shut the door
or
2. open with hinge on opposite side to the wall, so you have privacy when the door is left ajar. - But you need space for the door and ability to walk around it.
Our kids are still in primary school so not really an issue yet - but later on? I don't like the thought of them having to completely shut their door for privacy but also I like the ability to have the door open and not compromise on space - and be able to see them at all times!!
Any thoughts on what you have in your places?
thanks
