Help! cant figure out sitting room layout?

Hi, any advice on configuring this room. The offset fireplace (left-hand wall), narrow nature of the room all mean we can't get the layout right. I've marked how we have things now But imagine it was a blank slate, what furniture would you use and how would you lay them out?

Hi Phil there are a number of factors that need to be considered first such as

: what do you use the room for; how many people use the room, adults, children etc; do you use the fireplace. Also it looks like there are a couple of door openings to other rooms on the left wall and the top?

Hi Phil,

There is so much to consider to get spatial planning right.

With out clients, for this room, we would take lots into account including what's outside those lovely windows, the position of lightings (natural and artificial), how you and other people use and move around the space, what already exists in the space and how all of the elements interact with each other. I think you need to have a real play around with all those points and maybe try printing the plan out, cutting out furniture pieces and putting it together like a jigsaw to think about the pieces individually. Take advantage of those windows and other elements you like in the space.

Alternatively we, and propably many other interior designers, offer services for spacial planning or consulting services which will ensure the space is truly fit and funcational for your needs.

Hi, We have some great advice on brightening rooms and colour schemes. As we can see from the photos you already have quite a neutral room colour, although the red may be darkening the room a little with the contrast of the dark furniture. How about lightening the room by getting rid of the red wall feature and carrying on with the neutral theme. Also by using lighter accessories (cream curtains) this will lighten your room. If you want to add more colour we suggest doing this through the use of accessories such as cushions and throws. Hi Lauren! I worked on a project with a similar situation! The windows were in a spare bedroom, so ideally they really did need to be covered at night time, however only when people were staying over. We had venetian blinds made for the standard rectangular window, then for the 2 angled windows, we produced a 'shield'. Basically, we got our joiner to make two shields which were templated to the same shape as the window reveals, with a handle in the centre, which then hooked on to the window. So they could be taken up and down as you wish. They were produced in oak and finished the same colour as the rest of the joinery and blinds, with a handle in pewter to match the rest of the ironmongery in the house. Unfortunately I don't have ay photos of the shields, but you can see the window, and the hooks that the shield mounts on to! We found this to be the most simple, unfussy option, and you are still able to see the windows in their full glory. The shields are kept in the cupboard when not being used. I hope this helps! Thank you all very much for your suggestions. The fireplace is basically to create a focal point in the room. I can't have a real fire or gas fire as there is no chimney. So the plan is to have an electric fire with dummy chimney breast. Marcin, Thank you for your comment. I agree with you I don't like the curtains either. We inherited them from the previous owners. So they definitely need changing. I'll be grateful to see a 3D model. Where is your email?

I would consider having something other than downlights - either in addition to them or instead of - in the dining/living area Downlights especially LEDs can be an unforgiving light and don't provide any options. In my kitchen I have LED downlights, however, I have dimmable halogens in the dining bit, with a pair of wall lights, which make it feel warmer, cosier and more relaxing. I would have liked a pendant light fitting but the downlights were already there and we didn't want to go to the bother of redoing the ceiling. I would agree with Jonathan on under cupboard lighting - don't underestimate how much light you need in a kitchen and utility room. We have under cupboard lights and also in-cupboard lighting in the glass fronted wall cabinets. We have 18 downlights in the kitchen part (roughly 4.5m x 5.5m) of our kitchen/diner on two different switches (the diner bit is on a third switch/dimmer and wall lights on a fourth ) which proves most useful. Our utility is a separate room approx 3.5M x 3.5m and we have 6 downlights in there. Probably obvious, but don't have the downlights situated directly above the worktops/cabinets, if you have wall cupboards. Try to ensure you get full coverage of light over the room, to avoid dark patches, that can be aided by having tiltable downlights.

There is a lot of sitting space in the room and a lot of doors..... It makes me wonder is this was originally a smaller house with a lounge designed for fewer people..... Someone I know extended their house and decided that since the room in the middle got used as a cut through they put the living area elsewhere and used this room as a dining room

Thanks for comments so far. The room is used as a reception room when we have guests. So 4 to 6 people. We don't have a tv in this room.

We want a configuration where you can have people around and be able to have a conversation.
