Well, this depends a lot on who finds the money, what type of income/ resources they have and what they need/want for their houses. Personally, I'd spent it on something frivolous, as we are fortunate enough to be able to afford buying what's necessary for the house when it becomes necessary. And, as (he says) I'm not allowed to buy any more cushions or lights, I'd easily spend that £1K on a floor lamp. It would be either a Karim Rashid light (I just love that guy's stuff!!) or a Kundalini. Or maybe a Ligne Roset. Whichever, but it would be a floor lamp, as one just can never have enough lamps in the house (regardless of what one's husband says!).

My hand-bag should be much lighter these days but it's not. Big ones are away from home, small ones are teens - so old enough to cram all their worldly goods into their own pockets + suck it up if anything is lost/broken in their care. Now handbag is full of elderly relative's goods - prescription meds, haemorrhoid creams, spare nebuliser capsules, pocket hankies, spare catheter bag, his appointment cards, his paperwork, his pension card + shopping list, Vicks Vapo-rub, a caipín .... Car emptied of pushchairs + buggies + car-seats, replaced with walking sticks, 4 wheel rollator, Handybar for ease of getting in + out. Have learner plates + disability sticker on windscreen ... Ho hum

@Laura took the words right from underneath my fingers. I was going to ask the depth and width of the area where the shelves currently are. I've just had a PAX installed and I LOVE IT. My configuration is Two sets of 2 x 100cm wide (236cm H) units with the Harvik doors. I had them shortened as my ceiling didn't allow for the full height hence why I picked the easily hackable Harvik. The easy option is 4 x 75cm units with sliding doors of course. In one of my units, the inside was wallpapered and has a standard shelf which my monitor rests on and a pull out shelf directly below it that I use as a desk. I even have power in there so the cables are neat. the Pax really are an outstanding solution. A word of advice though to avoid extra expense and wasted time, especially if you are having someone install them; check them as soon as they arrive as the units can be damaged Good luck and pictures please :)

Hi Nicky, my apologies I have only just seen your message. We went for cornforth white Farrow and Ball (which it definitely not white). The shutters are not back open yet but some of them will need to go back on because the large expanses of grey look very grey. The bits next to the white look less austere. The new white garage door with windows has made a big difference. I'd be careful with a very pale grey because if your windows are anything like mine you'll find that they are not actually that white after all....

I would buy walls!

We have a 'porch' space on the side of our new house and I'd like to put some walls up in this area to enclose it, and create a pantry/utility style room - and within that I'd absolutely love to create a built in area where my dog could sleep!

I would buy the services of Didi DIY. C.I.C in Brighton.

This £1000 would Pay for Didi DIY/professional trader to come to my place. He would demonstrate and accompany me in renovating my home. I would learn the rights gestures...... Feeling empowered.

I would then know about materials and equipment to use...... save a lot, and live a lot.

We would put towards an annexe as my husbands father is elderly and has Alzheimer's disease. Would love to make a stylish simple functional space as lets be honest what makes a home is the people we share it with not the stuff.

I got a thousand pounds unexpectedly a few years ago, I replaced our plastic front door with oak and stained glass. Makes me happy from both sides. If it happened again, I would move the boiler, it's right in the way of hand washing in the downstairs loo. Drives me nuts but change will never happen in real life
