Chuck or sell old furniture?

Spring cleaning for me this season wasn't just a one-off, I've been decluttering my home for weeks! And I've come across a few pieces of furniture that I'd like to get rid of. But the question is, do I just throw them away, do I sell them and make a bit of profit or do I donate them to someone - what do you usually do?

We have a fabulous charity here in East Kent (I live in Canterbury) called Necessary Furniture. They collect your unwanted furniture and sell it at a very reasonable price to people on low budgets. I have had some fabulous bargains from them and I love how they are re-cycling unwanted items for the good of the people in the community and providing much-needed employment. Maybe there's an equivalent charity in your area?

There are lots of places that restore and recondition old and unwanted furniture. Usually to a pretty high standard too!

I try to give things to charity and we used to live very near an Oxfam furniture shop, so it was quite easy to take things down there. Since we've moved away though, there's no nearby equivalent and we don't have a car, so we've been guilty of throwing a few things away... a travesty, I know!

I agree made.com is a good option, both for table/chairs and for a corner sofa which is the style I'd go for - modern, good way to 'zone' space, neat and comfy. The mendini was my favourite for style and comfort. Or Venturi though this was a bit bigger I think. Percy are lovely dining chairs, though Ikea now have similar & tables too so worth checking also. Too much choice sometimes.

Oh I am completely green with envy! To buy a beautiful house and score all that gorgeous furniture - how fabulous! I haven't read all the posts but agree that to paint most of these pieces would be a crying shame. I also agree with having a few antique dealers look at your furniture and assess it's value; then sell the pieces you're not so fond of & enjoy those pieces you love.. At the risk of causing upset to anyone, the only pieces I'd consider painting would be those that are damaged beyond restoration but could still be usable &/or functional.... My head is still spinning at all that fab furniture - IF you could find it in Australia you'd be paying $$$$$$!

Hi Pannacotta, I think the etsy one may be unique rug store, they overdye vintage rugs. I really like the rug from westelm, will it be too modern though if you didn't like the JL striped one? What do you think of their Cadiz one? I can't decide if I like it! Hi - bigger screen today ! Looks a great party house ! Might be slightly less expense to put kitchen at front of ground floor and have wood burner and relaxed seating at the rear in the sunshine ? Purely as the pipes and electrics can drop down from above easier into the kitchen at that end from current position - and flue can go through existing chimney rather than putting a new chimney in all the way up the house ( mega bucks!) Were you considering opening French doors onto a small raised deck from ground floor as a more direct access to garden ? As long as you can still egress from basement (especially if it will become a sleep zone ) Might make life easier to add some more bathrooms - at least one on each floor would make life easier especially when you have a house full of guests ! I think you will have a great journey turning this home into one that echoes your sense of fun and style ! Enjoy the process !!!

I tend to donate mine to charity shops, a couple near me specialise in furniture and will come and pick up items - which saves trying to cram a large item into your car :)

Give them to charity. There are a few that do collect. You could go on pondering this for weeks, months, years! Bite the bullet and you will feel FREE of the clutter and good about your donation. Good luck!

I sell all my furniture on gumtree and use the money towards the new items I want to buy.

I give things one month on Gumtree, then if they don't sell they go to the charity shop. Even offer things for free on Gumtree or the likes to avoid landfill.

up cycling, it's amazing what a combination of new upholstery, paint, wood stain, new handles, new chair legs etc. can do to piece of furniture. I love the fact that once finished you can almost guarantee that no one else on the planet will have the same item as you have - truly unique!

There's a charity called DEBRA (debra.org.uk) and if you have one of their stores in your area they offer a free furniture collection for your donated goods.

I always give furniture that is in good condition to a local charity in Keighley who collect it and sell it on at low cost to people who are experiencing challenges getting a home together for example the homeless who have been able to get accommodation etc. It seems more worthwhile rather than throwing it away or trying to sell it.

don't throw away old furniture although brown furniture is not fashionable you can update and up cycle by sanding down and waxing or repaint with bright trendy colors You can paint either tops only legs only or even half paint and wax

It depends entirely on what it is, what's it worth, if I need funds or who might want it. Some to offspring setting up homes, some recycled and reused, some to charity, some sold on Facebay locally.

Give it to me :D I have a business 'upcycling' furniture, I buy from auctions, charity shops, re-use centres, anywhere that sells reasonably priced items. I've also scavenged from skips, picked things out of ditches and dug through piles of woodworm infested, damp and mouldy furniture in old fashioned 'reclamation' yards. I love saving furniture, I'm the one who puts up their hand when the auctioneer says 'will anyone give me five pounds for this?' I have no pride and all donations are gratefully accepted ;)

As above,my stuff gets triaged for Gumtree, charity or recycling/tip. If Gumtree stuff doesn't sell within a few weeks then it gets reduced or given away free. Most things will shift, and it is satisfying to see people collect it from you to be reused (and no effort required!)

as well as gumtree - you can use streetview to sell or give away unwanted items. there are usually a few dedicated up-cyclists hanging around on there.

I too would usually try Gumtree first and then if it's had no interest within a month I donate to charity. If it's too poor condition to sell or donate I find Freecycle a good option as there's often someone out there willing to take it off your hands and do it up. The advantage also being that you can arrange for the item to be collected from you.

Ebay, freecycyle (give's away free to local community) or Emmaus (charity that collects furniture, hires homeless people and proceeds go towards homeless charities). Never landfill! I've even left cheapy ikea furniture out on the pavement with a 'free' sign attached and its usually picked up within an hour or two!

It is a good question as there are quite a few options for you:

1). Sell them at reduced price on Ebay or Via Gumtree

2). Hire Furniture Removal Company

3). Giveaway to Charity

4). Plan a Furniture Renovation Project

The lat option is for specific situations, where you have an idea of what your new piece could look like but can't find it in any of the furniture stores.
