Most important asset a pro can have?

Hiring the right professional is incredibly important and something you want to consider once, twice or thrice perhaps, before you actually make a decision who you want to enlist.

When you research a professional, what do you look for?

As a professional I think it is important that you connect with your designer, that initial conversation should flow and remember we are also choosing our clients lol

Hello Emmeline,

I think a professional should be adaptable, able to intuit and interpret the clients needs and that of their home or space worked on. Having a range of skills is obviously as important as is their particular skill set. Respect and trust goes both ways. Whether you're a whole turnkey service or not.. That doesn't matter.. All that matters is that all the parties involved in the project are working together with full information, budgets, requirements and respect for each other and the client.

Now a little note on newer pro's and companies..

For companies or Pro's that are "new" emerging etc etc as nobody talks about this in a positive light from what I have read here.. Years of experience and so forth are nothing if there's no skill.. There are plenty of new companies that A don't have years of experience B masses of clients etc etc.. but as with any company or professional that has say 10-15 years experience or more.. I'd be looking less at the longevity, "experience" and more at their skill, flair and how they carry themselves..

It's no good being told someone has 20 years experience if they're terrible at what they do.. As with every pro or company everyone was new at some point. I had recently been told by someone gleefully he had 15 years experience in his trade... His work was the worst I have ever seen! For me... Skill, creativity, kindness and flair! : ))

I always read reviews and use checkatrade for everything now, I've had no problems at all ever. I think reviews can paint a somewhat more rosy picture though - for example I suspect most people feel more comfortable leaving a really good review (if they got ok or good service) than a bad review if something went wrong - people are simply too polite or nice to give honest feedback when things aren't perfect, especially if you get along with the tradesman. So, you might have 100 customers, 80 liked it and left a positive review, 20 were not so impressed and I doubt you'd have 20 negative reviews, maybe 3 or 4 at best.

Most of the elements have been covered already but I would say, first and foremost, storage. Get all the unattractive bottles and bits put away. The second is a large duel fuel towel rail. Summer in the UK isn't always that warm but may not be cold enough for central heating. To keep towels dry I install towel rails that are heated by the gas central heating system in winter or switched to electric for the summer months. There are good looking modern stainless steel towel rails that also act as radiators. If there is adequate space: a large bath, a large shower and a bidet or a WC/bidet combination. In addition, excellent lighting - both task and mood as well as underfloor heating. Definitely NO carpets and NO shower curtains but bath mats that can be washed and glass shower screens. By the way, Japanese baths have integral heating units but are deep and square so you have to sit with your knees up but you get constantly warm water up to your chin.

Totally agree, Christopher Brummit. I persuaded a friend that the place for her kitchen was not in the one room overlooking the garden - which is where it was when she bought the house - but in the middle with the dining room at the front (with a fireplace) and the sitting room at the back with a gorgeous view. I also think it's worth thinking about the dining room's location. In my 1927 house, it's meant to be at the back which means it overlooks the garden. Meanwhile, the sitting room overlooks the road. I swapped and couldn't be happier especially as the room at the back is much bigger. Shake it up is what I do!

A quality, credible professional should have all the assets listed (and more). It's all down to likeability, if either party doesn't like each other then no-one's buying or selling. People buy people first. :)

Hi Emmeline, having worked in Professional Services for over 25 years serving both large corporate institutions as well as home owners, one of the key aspects of deciding who to work with is "Trust".

So, how does a client know they can trust a service provider? Trust can be broken down into three components: 1) Credibility, i.e. can they do the job you want them to do, are they well referenced, do you like their style of work 2) Professional Relationship, i.e. can you work with them, are they empathetic, are they responsive and 3) Project Risk, i.e. do they understand where the risks are with your project, have they got ways of mitigating these risks, are they experienced in building projects and what can go wrong with contractors.

That's a pretty comprehensive list of attributes and as suggested in an earlier comment by Josephine Geeson there really is no reason for all of the above to be expected and then some though a shared enthusiasm between the client and the pro makes it all tick that bit better.
