Deceuninck swing slide patio doors

We are doing a single storey side rear extension on a Victorian mid terraced house and are trying to decide whether to have bifold or French doors or deceuninck swing and slide doors www.deceuninck.com ...... Has anyone had any experience good or bad of the above or got any recommendations ?!? It is about 2 metres wide and we are also trying to decide whether to use aluminium or UPVC

I was suggest there would be a huge price premium for opting for bifold doors over French doors for this width. The leaf size would be the same (assuming 2 leaves) but the French doors would probably provide a larger opening size once opened since the French doors may potentially be able to fold right back (depending on how far set back into reveal) whereas the bifold doors would only open at right angles and intrude since they will stack. My greatest concern however is the usability. French doors would be easy to use routinely to access the garden by simply opening the master door and leaving the slave shut. However, 2-leaf bifold doors will be far more laborious to use since both leaves will need to be opened. The alternative would be to opt for a 3-leaf configuration which would allow one leaf to open on it's own, but this would create unnecessary framework which would reduce the view/natural light. I hope that makes sense.

Which alternative would you pick if you had the same type of property but instead of 2 meters you had 5 meters???

For a kitchen, using part of the wall for the kitchen sink with a huge window above it for a garden view and placing Franch doors next to it seems much more pragmatic! We are most likely going to get the bi-fold doors for when we sell it. Nobody seems to mind the critters/bugs/intruders these big doors allow. If just using French doors and very large windows could even fit a bit of low window seats/storage.

So what Would you choose for the configuration of a 5 meter wall???

Hello Maria, It's an interesting room actually and firstly my suggestion is to paint the orange white as a base. You can then gauge light levels more easily which would then inform you as to how to treat the room. Removing the balustrade completely opens the room as the steps and split level arrangement can still denote separation.. Which you can use accordingly either by situating sofa or perhaps a console and then sofa or even just a console or low cabinet here with something decorative on it.. ... Viewing the back of a sofa or low piece with something lovely like a vase and floral arrangement or something decorative is a rather nice way to introduce if you like, another area of a room and give it a sleeker form of separation if that is required.. I also rather like the idea of having a more open split level arrangement.... Perhaps consider a fire that you can use.. Look into flueless fires as an alternative.. OR possibly even a small black wood burning stove with a twin wall flue. There are options you can research and look into which I think could be nice.. Store a pile of logs underneath the space is ideal. If you want to lighten the floor consider rugs and other layers here that can really be used as a basis for your design.. Placing the sofa facing the fireplace is really an idea focal point.. with armchair opposite angled towards the sofa and fireplace.. It could be a 3 seater with a matching square foot stool which you can sit at one end to create a chaise longue arrangement for something less formal.. Another idea I like is to have again a sofa facing the fireplace and then possibly two chairs with a small table in between at the side with their backs to the sliding door, but in a way that means they don't block the view or flow of the room.. Try things out and see what works for you and the room... You want to keep flow through the space and decorate as 1 space even if the rooms are functioning separately.. Layering colour is an ideal way to decorate and add texture. Situating a flat screen in a cabinet is a nice way to hide the tv as it's not what you want people to focus on when they come to your home.. So perhaps take out the shelving entirely in favour of a cabinet that could house the screen when you want to watch a film etc. There are really some fantastic elements to your new home- the rads are fantastic and I do like the fireplace.. I think you could make this fabulous.. Add textural and warm coloured elements to the sofa arms etc.. I can see earthy and warm tones with rich luxuriant additions.. such as cushions, throws and large floral arrangements for coffee table or side tables to add interest and finish the space .... :))

Hi John Thanks for the plan. We’ve discussed your dilemma with our in-house architect and he has some suggestions for you;  "Without knowing the layout of the garden, I assume that the large angled picture window in the kitchen looks towards a nice view and the kitchen door opens to a terrace or usable outdoor area – is this correct? If so, I suggest considering a Folding Door in the kitchen. When open, a Folding Door will provide a full width opening extending the house – and your lives – out into the garden in the summer time. Although Sliding Doors generally have fewer vertical mullions and hence more glass, a Folding Door of 2.96m wide will only require 3-panels compared with 2-panels for Sliding Door of the same width. The minor loss of visual connection would be offset by a significantly improved physical connection when the doors are open. A 3-panel Folding Door will also provide the benefit of one panel acting as a single swing door when you just want to pop in and out without opening the entire door. In the Dining room, will the door be used to access the garden often or is it more about the view? If it is about the view then a fixed picture window or Sliding Door would work. But if you like opening your house up to the garden then consider either a French Door or a 2-panel Folding Door (2L) to benefit from the full width of the opening. Aesthetically the panel sizes would be very similar and complementary to the 3-panel Folding Door in the kitchen." We hope this helps! Emily

Hi Justin, thank you for taking the time to reply to our query. It is difficult to compare systems because Deceuninck have not published very much technical information about that specific product on their website, but whilst in general terms uPVC may be able to perform fractionally better for U-values than aluminium (it depends on the system), our experience is that with slide and swing doors the weather rating (water tightness, air permeability and wind loading) tend to be much lower. I would also query the information you were given about security. The reason I say that is I cannot find any reference to their slide & swing doors having been tested to PAS24 standards (Building Regs Doc Q) or Secured by Design award standards. The technology of slide and swing doors is developing quickly, but it is starting from nearly 25 years behind bifold doors so will take some time to catch up - that said they are moving along quickly and in certain circumstances offer an alternative to bifold doors. Hello, if you don't want sight lines then I wouldn't have Crittall to be honest (unless you wanted Crittall without the cross bars of course?? as they are super busy and won't give you a clear view of the garden) We opted to go for bi-folds with slimmer sight lines and wider panes so there would be less lines. On your size opening, it would take 3 bi-fold panes which means the central one is just glass. If you had sliding doors then you would likely have 2 panels with the bar being right in the middle (unless you can slide them into pocket doors!) Bi-folds - they even do frame-less bi-folds now or ones with the lines super narrow so I would get prices for those. It also depends on your garden - as you say, because we had the bi-folds leading directly onto a patio area. If you have to step down then the garden will feel quite separate anyway and so you don't benefit from having an open 'room' as you would with a semi flush or flush threshold and bi-folds doors. In that case, Alu french doors with side panels that don't have all the cross bars would likely be the cheapest option for you.
