Glass Hob Quartz Cut Out - Help!

Hi All,

We had our Quartz work top installed the other day and the fitter asked if we wanted our Glass Gas Hob flush to the surface. He measured it to the specification of the product. When the surface arrived and hob installed our builder noticed there was a 2.5mm gap around it. (See image below)

We have spoken to the worktop company and they said this is normal because the hob will expand. I am wondering if this is correct and if anyone else has experienced this?

The fitter is correct in what he's said but he needs to silicone around the hob with a clear silicone which will make it look better. I would recommend a forever clear silicone so it doesn't go mouldy after a while. It will tell you this in your hobs installation instructions. Any more queries I would be happy to help

Is your hob new? If so it would have come with a template for your worktop guys to use as a guild, they should always use the gieven template. Sam is right re expansion, although i think your gap looks bigger than needed and not the same all round which is a shame.

i would ask him to move the hob to even out the gap and then use the clear silicone. Once filled it will look much better.

I think the answer is, it depends... On what sort of cooking you do; how much pain you feel if you see a grease spot; what sort of things you want to put on the shelf and whether you will replace them often. Of course, you could just put glass doors, although the effect won't be the same. I applaud your choice of matt cabinet finish - super shiny finishes are such a pain to keep looking good.

Running the upstand behind the hob looks absolutely fine, seen it plenty of times and customers have always been happy, the only slight downside is large pans and woks can be up against the upstand as its thicker than your tiles but thats being really picky. Personnally i prefer this look then stopping the upstand, then stepping back for your splashback tiles and then stepping forward again and restarting the upstand and its easier to keep clean as well with no little corners for dirt to get trapped.

Mine was an 800 before I removed the glass - the main fan section is smaller of course so I presume that it’s the actual canopy that makes the difference ie if the extractor canopy is 800 with an 800 hob then most of the steam that rises, should hit the top of the canopy and be drawn towards the extractor. Even though we removed the glass on ours, it will be set into a suspended wood canopy so in effect, the steam should do the same thing. I’m told induction hobs are super steamy, ha ha. We got a Neff extractor which is also v quiet so hoping it does the trick!

Hi Anastassia, Yes it is perfectly fine to combine a gas hob with an induction. If you search Domino hobs you'll find some, Neff and Miele do some nice ones. Also it's fine to cut two hole for the hobs in your quartz, though there should be about 60mm minimum of stone between. You can with some models get joining/connecting strips, so therefore just cutting one hole, depending on the look you want. Hope that helps :))

Thank you both, this is great advice and has lightened our spirits! The fitter used the measurement provided by the manufacturer to make the hole, so I'm guessing we are missing the clear silicone to finish the look. Yes, the hob is brand new, so will have a look and see what they say. Our builder is still working on the property so sounds like it can be a simple fix, fingers crossed!
