Design Dilemma Gardens

need help for garden arrangement to cover klargester in front garden

I have a front garden which has a klargester septic tank which was covered by tress which I have removed. I will need to have access to this for maintenance etc and looking for some ideas as to what I can do with this for flower / plant arrangements for this.

I am currently involved in a project where we have buried the offending structure partially in a raised timber bed and planted a range of groundcover shrubs around the access - including: Pachysandra terminalis, Cotoneaster dammeri, Cornus canadensis to name a few. Good Luck!

I would be very concerned that water is seeping into the brickwork and maybe causing damp to the house, especially if the level of soil and water comes above the brick dpc you would certainly get rising damp. Unfortunately when so much concrete was put down many years ago no one seemed to stop and think where all the water would go and your land unfortunately slopes towards your bungalow, the concrete is literally ushering it in. I don't know how DIY friendly you are but you need to get that concrete up fast and perhaps install a soak away which is essentially just a big hole filled with rubble well away from the house to allow water to drain into then gradually soak away. Presumably also clay soil. Your obvious bet then would be flower beds, lawn, and where you need car space gravel so the rain can soak through. Best of luck! You probably need a similar big hole dug in the back garden, away from the house. You can hire a mini digger for about £100 a day which takes the pain out of this sort of job. Keep solid paving etc away from your property as much as possible, have flower borders so the water has somewhere to go, that is key. If you some slabs near to the house, don't put them right up to the house wall stuff lots of gravel in between the house wall and the paving, but wherever possible, just use gravel and soakaways.

I would say some of the previous suggestions have been good - we had a similar problem in Oxfordshire. Heucheras are great, especially in a mixture of colors, try at least one red in the mix. A couple of dwarf conifers give good evergreen year round structure, which is so important, you want some some strong lines in a front border or it can look very bitty and insignificant. If things grow a bit above the wall, so much the better, as it will also soften the lines and it looks as if you could do with some height. Add a few fail safe plants clumping plants that will bring some color into the mix at different times of year - Japanese anenomies are great, white ones look modern, or go for pink. Schizostylis are fantastic, would never plan a garden without them. They come from Siberia so will survive come what may! Come in pinks or red and flower from late autumn through to spring, when no other color around, even in snow, you can also put them in pots. Crocosmia are pretty fails safe too and come in lots of colors. Yes, tuck some bulbs inbetween things and see what happens, don't forget these can also go in pots for seasonal color, you can even buy ready planted.

I do like Sven's idea of the blue palm ( chamaerops Humilis cerifera ), but maybe not in a pot as they do get very large. It would have to go in place of the tree as they can reach heights of 3 m x 2m wide. However, it would look nice with your front door, but maybe in a stone circle. You can't really put honeysuckle ( lonicera ), in the borders unless it's against the fence and you run wires for it, but i think your fence is probably too low. Lilac in white and pink or mauve would be better Depending on variety again, they're prolific growers, but will cover a fence in no time and smell fabulous. I'd have a stone circle in the middle and then a curved bed at the front with some higher plants, foxgloves, Iris, Japanese Anemonies etc at the back for height, some giant double pink poppies, weigela, candytuft to break it all up and get some white in amongst the pinks, purples and blues. All would look lovely with grey stone and your front door. I will try and take a photo but not until next week as I am working away at the moment. I could ask my husband! Hi AR I just wanted to say we planted a bay tree hedge in our front garden in our old house to stop people looking into our basement because the kids played down there but we were never really happy with it. It did the job but it never really looked plush and healthy but we were on a very busy road. But I do agree it did look different to all the yew hedges or laurel which are used abundantly as hedges. We have planted 3 portuguese laurel in our current back garden. We are trying to create a screen. They haven't grown big enough yet to create a hedge but I do like them because the leaves are smaller than an english laurel so you don't get lots of big leaves cut in half if you take a hedge trimmer to it. They are a lovely dark green and the stems on the fresh growth are also slightly red which is attractive. One of them (don't know why only one) also has tendrils of white flowers in a cigar shape which is also pretty. Not sure if you would still get the flowers if it was trimmed every year into a hedge. The Laurel are planted at a low level which I hope in time will just grow taller than the fence. We have then planted 2 metres in front of them on a higher level 5 photinia trees (lollypop shape but 10 ft tall) which hopefully should grow together and prevent neighbours seeing us from their top windows. I think it might take 3 years yet. We were thinking of pleaching but I decided to let them grow naturally. It's created a layer effect which is quite pretty. I will take a photo of that when I get home.

Geranium rozanne is an awesome ground cover perennial which really spreads and flowers forever. See RHS picture attached. Alternatively, for something totally different, why not consider a beautiful scrambling Clematis to creep across your septic tank?
