Calling All House Designers

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I thought this would be a good place to get some directed house design opinions. I love designing houses ie floor plans and ultimately I want to pursue a career in designing houses and having them built but I have no idea how to do it? Is there a specific degree I should be looking at as Architecture itself isn't really what I want to be doing.

Is there anyone who does this as their job and if so what would you suggest I do?

You can take a course in auto cad at your local college...start there and see if you like it

I'm in my first year of Architecture at University at the moment and as part of it they teach us AutoCad, which is the part I like. Do you reckon something like Building Design would be a better option?

Hi, currently were a blank canvas, and getting ready for extension. I would like to retain the original features of the house, stripped doors and picture rails. We will perhaps look at concrete flooring or worktops in the new extension. Reclaimed parquet or rework our floorboards in the main part of the house. Our main issue is the layout - i quite like freestanding kitchens or even reclaimed peices rather than standard units around. I am so glad I joined Houzz, such great knowledge and advice shared everyday! Great plans Jonathan, very bold choice of colours for the exterior I would have never considered that as we were looking at a more monochrome outlook, similar to the below. I think we would change the downstairs so that there was no garage (there is something similar already in the garden and the carriage driveway is massive) and instead a nice wide entrance area with two lounges coming off and then off the centre of that entrance large glass doors leading to a very elegant and classic kitchen and casual dining and living area with complete view of the garden. An elegant staircase would be a very nice feature of the entrance also leading to a galleried landing.Coming off the kitchen to either the left or right a study + utility room. There is also a very random bungalow in the garden - ha! No idea what to do with it but its not very good to look at.

Talk to your professor and tell him or her what you are most interested in, then let them advise you best

I would think building design would be better as per Elshaw's comment. When you get to the stage of building for yourself, then you pool Architects, Builders, Planners etc to help you. You have to know how to build and what can be built before you can design. Anyone can come up with ideas, but if they are impossible to build, they're not worth the time spent conjouring them up.
