Need help on style of porch and front door!
Comments (103)Thanks so much everyone - this has been great. Sorry for the lack of response - been flat out!!!! It must be hard for you American guys to work on such old English designs.... The ideas have gradually culminated into what really would look good on the house. Ourfarmhouse - these are absolutely great ideas, and thanks Everything Beautiful for getting the jist and putting the ideas onto the house image - nothing like seeing an actual design on your own home. We've got an architech working on it, and he's keen on the iron-wrought idea... but we're not sure. Basically toss-up with this and Everything Beautiful's design (2 above). Going with a four-pannel door, but would like to incorporate some glass somewhere! Possibly a panel above with the house name engraved on it?? Victoria - absolutely right...! We don't need to sit outside with the weather.......... say no more! Just wanting something to cover yourself while you're unlocking the door. We've also done a tour of the local areas, and found a couple of porches - amazing what you find right on your doorstep! Will attach pics shortly......See MoreHelp! Comments (14)Hello becks5109, Could you possibly have a Japanese style soaking bath and shower.. They come in a range of sizes about a meter long and wide... It could be a nice arrangement.. Bi-fold or sliding doors can be a good way of maximising space where you cannot open the door as usual.. Situate the loo behind the sink in the corner.. Another thought is to turn the shower round completely to go along the rear wall and have a smaller one so that you can have the soaking bath.. Loo could stay behind door and sink possibly under the window.. I'd suggest wall hung to compliment the streamlined look... Frees the floor space and easy to keep clean.. If you need a screen a simple sheet glass.. Or partially build the soaking tub in with wooden frame and plasterboard.. wooden step into it makes for a hidden soak.. Here's a pic of something similar.. : )) If you really want a bath then perhaps consider the Tubby Torre by Albion.. They are very small and deep baths.....See MoreIs our picture rail original 1930s or a strange 1970s addition?
Comments (6)Hi Claire, As kmizzlee said the lower one would have been where the original picture rail sat (please re-instate too - its great being able to move artwork/seasonal decorations around without putting holes in the walls!). I would hazard a guess that originally there would gave been a cornice then in the 1970's the owner decided to rip the cornicing out at the same time as the picture rail in an attempt to 'modernise'. Upon finding that the plaster simply went up to the cornice and not underneath they bodged the job and put up the odd moulding to disguise it somewhat. 1920's-30's cornicing was generally of a low profile (ie it didnt extend far down the wall) but was often of a staggered design extending further along the ceiling, it could be my imagination from the photo but there seems a faint suggestion of this on the ceiling? https://www.regency-mouldings.com/products/cornice/modern_and_art_deco/details/3-step...See MoreIs this picture rail original 1930s?
Comments (22)Just so you know, these parts are made on a tool called s spindle;e (small scale manufacturing). if you really really want to get the shape "just so" the supplier will be able to have a profile made for you, a new profile blade for a spindle machine will cost between £200 and £300. They may also have a minimum order OR they might ask you to pay a modest amount towards "set up time" (changing the blade over, etc.) I use Ternex in Welwyn for this sort of thing, their existing profiles can be seen here...https://www.flickr.com/photos/exploitspace/albums/72157669236158295...See Moreabbyjean
