I am trying to create a living room with a victorian look.cosy comfy

my problem is the two chairs I need to replace them I have been to loads of shops and can't find a small comfy chair to replace them.

It's not easy to purchase 'off the high street' stuff that's for a period look. You need antique shops and online suppliers of one off chairs. Wing back and club chairs are of the Victorian era, so try searching online for that type of thing. Victorians were all about colour and rich textures. Blues, Greens, dark reds in crushed velvets. They also had a good old quantitiy of dark wood, mahogany, then some slightly lighter in Elm and Oak. Basically, richness was the key word. Start with a couple of wing back armchairs in a bold contrastng colour. Get a throw for the sofa to hide it's modern look if you can't replace. A rich rug, dark wood coffee table and side tables. Mixing and matching the woods is ok, as Eclectic is a good look for that Era also. Maybe you could just paint the bottom of the coffee table that you have as it's to country cottage for the right look at the moment.

I'm afraid I really wouldn't combine these two furniture styles. The J groove kitchen design will work well with the sofa however the other pieces you are referring to are too stylised and ornate work with the others. On the one hand you you are looking at simple clean lines and on the other quite fussy decorative pieces. If you really like this furniture and are prepared to be 'individual' then by all means do it, it's your home and you are entitled to have the things you love around you. Make a strong link with the colours perhaps, or use a period style wallpaper in the kitchen. (You will have to be careful to create a true connection of styles). However from a design point of view these really do not work together. I think you could work with the kitchen and furniture, but the sofa really would look out of place, Sorry that's probably not what you want to hear :-(

Hello Heidi, Firstly it's a great room and lots of potential here. You could paint the feature wall with the fireplace a slightly darker shade of something that compliments the sofas.. In this way you instantly create a focus for the room and the fireplace does just that. I'd like to suggest that you place the sofa in line with the fireplace. Then 1 armchair I would angle to the left of the fireplace if you're looking at it. The book case is a reach away when wanting to read but I'd turn it round to frame the doors.. It might be a nice idea to actually move the other bookcase over to place on the other side... ie where the chest of drawers is.. So they both frame the doors... Paint the mirror frame and hang this... Keep some space free on the mantle as this gives the fire room to become a bit more expansive... Why not place the chest of drawers to the left of the fireplace behind the armchair... You can house toys and things here. It's both elegant and a good way to frame the fireplace as you don't have a chimney breast.. On the other find a low side table or a low cabinet.. You could house the television on this pretty much as it is currently.. Keep drinks in the cabinet or something, so they have functions and multiple uses.. Differing heights adds to interest here and it could be good to hang that 1 picture on the rear of the sofa wall with the others... Then there is a bit of room for the little one's to play as you can place the little white table and chairs near the window where it's warm with the rad. Find a nice lampshade for the central light and then place the table lamp close to the sofa.. possibly one with the armchair.. So you have pools of light in different areas and the room is ambient. You may find you do without the central light all together.. So really the key here is that I don't think you need to buy anything else and indeed I feel it would spoil the flow to add more seating.... Scatter the cushions so they are fewer, one or two at 1 end and 1 or two on the armchair.... maybe make a seating pile for the little ones with any left over.. : ))

We were going for the 3 seater + the chaise, so it'd be wide. Then the footstool as well so when it's just us two we can create 2 chaises for ultimate comfort. We considered a 3 seater + 2 seater but the room is awkwardly shaped / laid out for that. We wanted something large enough for multiple people to sit on if we have visitors. The 3 seater on its own with the footstool would make for smaller width as you'd lose the + chaise seat, know what I mean? Unless we did a 3 seater plus a chair. With the TV in one corner and the wood stove in the other, I can't figure out how to place two sofas without one of them being back / side on to something or blocking it.

Hi Rumkini, Thanks for that. I’m not sure you picked up on all the doorways and walkways?, so I've put red arrows on the crucial well worn routes, one being the Kitchen, and the other the main entrance/central walkway. I thought about an “L” arrangement, but as you say, you cant recline onto each-other, it creates “premium/preferred seating”, and less routes to get around. I’ve looked at your plan, and by moving the tv facing couch much further back, may work, but only with slim or no end tables as I think the coffee table would end up too far away, and it really restricts the main walkthrough. I’m looking to level the playing field on the seating options and certainly in favour of the idea that everyone will have the same view, not fighting over “the” TV junky spot (or rather Elite Dangerous on the Xbox spot when it comes to my 13 year old along with wires, laptop controllers...sufficed to say I'm moving the boy OUT of the living area). Re, view of the tv, the further away you are is the better view, it’s a compromise, optimum viewing vs facing eachother, but to be honest, I don’t think many ever sit on the end of a sofa with a comfy arm rest in a regimented position. The odd thing is, being a curved tv helps me out a bit, genuinely, with the angles. The Dining table is a 6 seater 1800x900, and I have a foldaway 900x900 catering table to extend it for Christmas. I did put it to scale on the plan, but showing it all out on this next picture, and I’m not concerned about that at all, it has space elsewhere for now. Besides, I “will” have room to put it here, but not yet. After trawling through sofa options, I find it is possible to have a true 3 seater at 205x98 rather than nearer 230x210 with reclining ends. Also, I can sell my 600x600 oversized lamp tables to opt for 200x600 slim end tables. The rug I've put in for scale is 2000x1400. With or without the smaller couches, I'm finding that perhaps the TV should actually stay right where it is after all, plus reducing glare from the window especially at this time of the year with the low sun. If I took the top picture, keeping the tv where it is, and take on board your idea that I do have the room to move them further apart/more into the dining area, I can fit something inbetween too. I red circled the couch over the corner of the window/radiator... it sets off something OCD in me. Even if the couch was to be pulled away from the wall, it restricts the main walkthrough whether it is this way or the L plan suggested.

Hi. This is quite pricey but comes in a choice of 72 colours. There are a few styles and they're actual victorian chairs. You can also pick up victorian chairs on eBay and have them reupholstered. I looked at that option but it didn't make sense with the price of the velvet. Alternatively there are lots of victorian style chairs around. As man around the House said look for wing, club and tub
