How do you light your garden?

The days are getting longer and hopefully, warmer. And you know what that means if you have a garden - more time spent outdoors!

We only have solar powered lights at present, mainly because we're moving and building a new house. I'm planning to have all the lights hard wired so that I can control the garden lights from the house or garden. I'd like a range of lights so that they can be functional or ambient. I can't wait to get my teeth stuck into it!

It really depends on the space you have and what you use the area for. We think garden lighting should be practical and aesthetic at the same time. You can take a look at our blog to see how to light up your outdoor space for the summer party season.

We strongly advice some form of lighting to our clients, as lighting your garden will not only highlight trees, paths and steps etc. for parctical reason but also allow year long views of your outdoor space during those long dark winter months.

I start taking my decorations down in the days after 2nd Jan but usually leave a few bits up until 5th of January, the evening of which, I (and the Church of England) consider to be Twelfth night. It seems logical to me that Christmas Day is the first Day of Christmas, and twelfth night is the last evening before Epiphany. Weekly? Oh, how I wish it were only weekly. I'm out there nearly every day culling the three-cornered leek that has reappeared as a thick blanket despite me culling it in the first spring I was here, in my new house, then finding it had reappeared hugely aggressively last year and now, in my third spring, it's even thicker and even more widespread - and is now not only in the flower beds but also in the lawn, thick along the edge, scattered within it. Front and back. It takes about two hours to clear about a square yard - digging under the bulbs; banging off the (very good, I've been told) soil in which there are always several earthworms which I need to hang on to (obviously); then picking out the tiniest bulbs left behind. I don't think I can ever finish it this year - as happened last year - which means the problem will go on for decades. I don't really have the time (I need to work, I need a life beyond digging and clearing). The only solution I can think of is to bring in help but my budget won't allow that. I value having lawn so paving it over isn't an option. I will have less planting space, which will eventually mean less weeding, but it's not something I can do right now - I've too much to do to bring the indoors up to date. I disagree with Jo DP. The previous owners had a keep it wild policy and now I have this big problem with a massively invasive plant. And, yes, I have tried using it in recipes - it really isn't worth the effort of keeping it under control (to have a limited supply). I'm an experienced and adventurous cook and three-cornered leek is an overrated ingredient, even though it's free and in my garden.

Bonfires are the best! (especially when there are marshmallows involved!) I think the garden can be really cosy in winter - as long as you are equipped with plenty of blankets or a lovely warming patio heater. When you spot the first robin then you know Christmas is coming!

How would you get more light into your home using your door choices?

To transfer light from a well externally-lit room to one that is not (eg internal hall) - glazed internal doors transform a space. These can be as decorative or as plain as required to suit the design of the space. On a recently completed project, we adopted a design that hinted towards the deco character of the building.

We agree with Litecraft as it does depend what you want to do with your space and as mentioned by GreenlinesDesign Ltd you can make use of lighting to highlight particular areas of interest in your garden. We are finding at the moment that garden spike lights and wall lights are proving to be popular sellers as now in particular seems to be the time of year when the weather has improved enough for people to start thinking about paying attention to their outdoor spaces. It doesn't just have to be a garden area though that you can light up as even if you just have a yard or patio space you can still make use of lighting to create an atmosphere for those alfresco dining times!

From floodlights to randomly scattered fairylights to smartly located led striplights I for one am in favour of them all, it just all depends on the purpose. For example circular floor lights lined either side of a pathway or a floodlight attached to the rear wall in order that people can safely get to the lounging area of a larger garden serve purposes of function where as fairylights whilst offering some lighting are more about experiencing that little tingling sensation of joy and led strip lighting on the other hand maintains that feeling whilst being fully functional and setting a wonderful ambience.

The Collingwood 1 watt mini spike spotlights are very good for highlighting planting - they look stylish and offer flexibility as they are small and easy to reposition. But stronger lighting is generally needed for uplighting trees. I've never tried solar lighting but I've have heard that it doesn't perform well in the UK.

I have solar powered white fairy lights on my shed at the bottom of garden which work and twinkle beautifully all year ~ althought I find high winds changes the sequence occasionally ~ so sometimes for a day or so a have a fairground attraction !!!

I recommend usingOutdoor Solar Garden Lights. First of all, it does not use power, absorbs solar energy during the day, and naturally glows at night. Then it is also very decorative and easy to install. If you don't like it, or want to change the style of your home, you can quickly remove it.

We've got a street light that sits perfectly at the bottom corner of our garden. It gives the perfect lighting all the way to the house so we don't actually need any.
