What colour should I paint the outside walls of my 1970s house?

Am trying to give a lift to a rather boring 1970s house. I now have a fabulous through kitchen/dining room with bi fold doors onto the garden, and sliding pocket doors through to living room. Have painted 8 tester squares on outside wall and none are good! Am looking for a grey with a hint of green - I have Egyptian Cotton throughout the house, which is brilliant but looks rather bland when outside. Any ideas?

If you are looking for a green based grey I would recommend farrow and ball Old White. We are just having our house repainted this colour. I wanted grey but we are surrounded by greenery and the blue based greys looked light blue rather than grey. The green base to Old White works well with greenery. Its also a very classic colour and so is easy to live with (or at least I hope so!).

I have been amazed at how different the different greys look when put next to one another. All look grey in isolation. Together you can very clearly see that some are green based, some blue based and some purple based.

Hi. I'd paint the dado rail and below in a darker shade of grey with a lighter shade on top. I wouldn't go too dark, maybe a light to medium on the bottom. If you wanted to add another colour for accessories try a deep turquoise or green. If you wanted more colour try a pale olive on the walls instead

Hi Stacy. I think weatherboarding will work for the look you're after. Would you paint it all one colour? My only worry was whether it would all be a bit one dimensional and whether the boarding would make the ground floor look lower ( I've drawn it out though and it doesn't seem to make any difference but that could be my lack of drawing skills!) I wonder if you could add a porch with weatherboard like this with either side of the front rendered and painted? The porch doesn't have to be as complex/expensive as this with the steps etc. I've had a similar size ŵall rendered and it was about £150 from memory so the cost would really be for the porch. Can you or your husband draw? I think your instinct is spot on - the grey does not go with your lovely house at all! You said yourself, 'the grey craze', why follow the herd? Perhaps you should question why you want a 'contemporary colour' instead of one of the many choices which will enhance your beautiful period house. You don't see lovely pink Suffolk cottages, or the black and white half timbered houses characteristic of some areas daubed with grey because it's the latest fad.

I think anthracite grey will be absolutely perfect. It will match the roof tiles. I once updated the rear windows of a red brick Edwardian house with anthracite grey powder coated new windows. A dark grey planter with some greenery either side of the front door would lift it. Bay trees or something similar.
