How to add some kerb appeal?

The first task in our new home is to bring these nasty windows up to date. It's also a good opportunity to rethink the porch and the style of window in the garage conversion. We're thinking black frames and adding a pitch roof over the front door. What do you think? Thanks!

Are you thinking of painting the frames you have or replacing the windows entirely? That could be costly with three large bays.

A pitch over the front door could work if you can match in the roof tiles. It would echo the gable end. I'd also replace that front door.

There is a mock tudor house near to me painted a soft cream with the woodwork in grey. It looks lovely and far more up to date.

I think it will look much better with the little pitched roof changed to darker tile, in keeping with the roof, and, also with the pitched roof over the porch. Excellent idea. You may need to re-vamp the driveway as that has been given a more terracotta tone too. Luckily you can actually stain bricks, so no need to dig them up, just use a sprayer and coat the bricks a darker grey / black tone to match the timbers and windows that you have in mind.

There's lots of great ideas for plants here, but I would strongly suggest you get answers to the following questions before you choose a plant/plants. - What direction does the wall face? - What sort of soil is there at the base of the wall? (Ask neighbours or post a photo of a spadeful of soil here which will probably let people identify the soil type) - Does water which falls on the tarmac run towards the wall or away from it? Walls cast a 'rain shadow' so if the water runs away from the wall that patch of ground is likely to be extremely dry. You would have to choose a particularly drought-resistant climber or be prepared to add extra water in some way. If you choose a plant which likes the conditions you have, it'll thrive. If you don't it will probably die and then you'll end up feeling like you're a rubbish gardener. Those Spanish Bluebells you liked are extremely tough though, and should do well wherever. ...also, if the conditions are right, I'd like to put in a word for my favourite climber, the evergreen and fast-growing Clematis armandii.

How about a row of low growing Hebe or Japanese holly bushes on your side of the boundary lawn and under window. Then block paving to the lawn and existing drive. Check your house deeds though, as alot of new builds have covenants in them that won't allow fences or hedges to the front elevation and the lawn has to stay too. If you get a new drive, do it after the extension in the back. Otherwise it will be ruined by all the builders stuff that gets stored there. Half my garden is a builder's yard (so that will need re doing) and my entire front drive is taken up by a skip.

I am with many commenters on the oak porch idea and maybe rendering the brick section also. I think that would look really stunning! Definitely get rid of the odd door if there is no practical use for it. I also think white windows would probably freshen the place up quite a bit and help it look a little less dated but still with plenty of character. It really is a beautiful space to work with! Lovely property! Also grab a couple tall trees in nice pots for either side of the porch it always adds a touch of grandeur and elegance!

Hi Patrina, I agree gardening is excellent therapy, especially when recovering from an illness. I can only do short bursts of work in my garden due to arthritis - there isn’t a bit of my body that hasn’t been affected! Despite this I’ve got loads of plants crammed in all over the place. I just love plants. I can see you love a formal garden, so here are plants that I think would suit you. None of them need pruning or faffing with, apart from watering in their first year. Viburnum tinus (evergreen with white flowers in winter 6’ tall), Euonymus (evergreen variegated leaves, low growing but spreading habit and can be clipped), Choysia ternata Sundance (evergreen bright yellow leaves, white flowers, about 5’) Hydrangeas (there are many varieties, all stunning). These do need a prune in spring. Cistus (evergreen, about 2-3 ft tall, smothered in white or pink flowers). Trachelospernum jasminoides the Star Jasmine. Evergreen climber with heavily scented white flowers in summer. Needs a warm sheltered spot. Ceanothus. Evergreen shrub with beautiful blue flowers in early summer. Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) - decidious small trees with green, yellow or purple leaves which turn a stunning red in autumn. Need dappled shade. These can be underplanted with perennials for added colour such as hardy Geraniums, Crocosmia, Hemerocallis, Doronicums, Erigeron etc. Heres some pics: Cistus Acers Ceanothus Viburnum tinus

I would add to the above that the bay window above the former garage looks "blind" and would look better with glazing bars to match the other bays on the house. The garage conversion window is oddly proportioned and might look better split into two, or three, separate windows with piers between them. If you don't need all the paving (I know parking is always at a premium so you might) you could remove a few sections of it to get some planting in. If not some nice raised planters with evergreen shrubs in would soften the expanse.
