garden advise

does anybody have any ideas on what i can do with my garden? i need it to be low maintenance and as child friendly as possible. i want to keep the slabbing at the bottom, and also add a grassy area some where. any advice is much appreciated, TIA.

Hi Martin - Show it some love! This question really needs a budget put against it and a bit more details about future use etc, not least because of the levels. Sizes, kids ages etc and aspect, house style etc etc. Is the gate an exit to another garden of yours or just an exit? What would be the main purpose of the 'grassy area' be? When you say child friendly do you mean 'child safe' or a 'child playground'. On first glance it looks as though it was laid out by a gardener with no child focus and now you what to do a 180 on that.

Decide first what you really want from your garden, what sort of plants do you like? Cut pictures from magazines. Do you intend socialise a lot if so you will need an area for that, ideally with the sun shinning on it when you are most likely to use it. Other things such as planning where a shed or washing line may go. Live with you garden as it is for a while and see what happens to it, you may have some plants already that you can't see you may also then get a feel for how you want it. Hi Leeza - what well weeded borders you have! And welcome to the world of gardening - its great fun!! The shrubs you have will definitely bush out over time to cover the wall to a greater extent than they do know. I would be tempted to add some summer flowering perennials to fill up some of the space - something very easy to look after like a harder geranium orion or rozanne and maybe some penstemon like Raven - these would bring some colour interest into the area. Also think about some spring bulbs like iris reticulata, crocus or tulips. Good to plant know and they will cheer up the whole area. Other than that get a good mulch/top dressing to try and keep the weeds down!

can you remember what that stump was? If it was a laurel, you will need to remove it or poison it as it will come back and could lift and damage your pattern imprinted concrete. As above any small evergreen shrubs would look nice, I wouldn't put any gravel down of bark as it will end up all over your drive. Once the plants have grown they will cover the soil. Skimmia japonica (as above) Sarcococca humillis (scented) Hebe various specimens Cistus x corbariensis Viburnum davidii A nice Acer palmatum would look good in the middle or Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'

Hi Jonathan, thanks so much for your reply. We will be removing some of the hedge at the front to allow for the new porch. The larger garden gets the sun rise and all day (south-east facing). There is no option to park in front of the existing front door. We have a pretty good view from our living room and smaller garden (South-West facing) and we see the sunset from our living room. The plan is to cut back the overgrowth from the field rear of us to open the view up in the larger garden too. I've attached some more photo's to hopefully show a bit more. The current front door is below the dormer window. Have you any thoughts on the internal layout changes? Thanks again, Claire and Danny.
