Need help with home office design

My partner and I have recently moved into a 3 bedroom house and would like to use one of the rooms as a study. We would like the whole side of one wall to be converted to a long desk with shelves all the way to the top of the ceiling for storing books, DVDs and box files.

The main requirement is functionality. I have looked on many designer websites, and although the aesthetics looks great, we cannot afford the price tag that comes with them. I have tried to find local carpenters that might be able to build and fit something like this, but so far I've not had much luck. I live in the Hampshire area. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I should go about trying to find someone to build a bespoke desk + shelves but at a sensible cost?

The wall total length is 3415mm including alcove on the right. Alcove measures 665mm wide and 1056mm depth. I can provide pictures in the future if that would help.

I have just fitted out a dreary bedroom as an office. We painted everything dulux timeless and then installed thick oak worktops (worktop express) along 2 sides of the room. I oiled them (as the floor) with Osmo white tinted oil. The cost of the worktops was £350 plus the carpenters time for fitting. Although we are using an ikea unit for storage, in the past we have used chunky oak brackets and painted mdf shelves.

Thanks for this. That is something very similar to what I want, but as we do not have a slanted roof, I want to put shelving up to the wall. The issue with the shelving is I don't know how stable it'll be and whether it would need to support itself on the desk, or would smaller shelves be an option.

Nevertheless, thank you for the pictures, it helps give me an idea of what I could do.

How about painting the radiator and the wall it is on blackboard paint, having a gallery including your piece of graffiti art (I like it) on the wall on which the door is on. You can have a couch there or a daybed, whatever you want. Keep all the walls white except the one with blackboard, leave your curtains as black white and grey and paint your floor glossy white. Put a modern light as your main light. By having all these items in black whites and grey it means that it can change to another room at a later date easily. Have the wall shelves as you had them in your design, go for a white desk and have an orange chair. Have an extra large rug that has some black or grey. For the bookcase I suggest some closed in cupboards for items you don't want to see and some open shelves for items that can look pretty. Hello, I think you have got an easy job actually. Your room looks very pretty the way it is, a bit of an arrangement will take it where you would like to see it. I was collecting some inspirational images for you, so that you can see that there are other home offices as well of the same style, with beautiful flooring and nice windows. If I was you I would add different style furniture and some decoration. You could consider having integrated shelves where the chimney breast is, a seating area would be a great addition too. What a beautiful house. So pleased you have embraced the age and style of the house rather than deciding to ‘modernise’ it as so many posts on this forum want to do to their homes. The door is a lovely colour - agree with you about using that instead of the white on the surrounding woodwork - I’d use it on the inside of the door too. Crest idea is smashing. I think all it is missing then is some softening up ... I would add some beautifully simple planted larger tubs either side of the porch - I think the box look a bit too restrained & out of proportion - I’d go for white flowers spilling over the edge and silver foliage. Maybe something with height - olive trees? Bay ? Maybe echo the planting in window boxes on the ground floor cills (obviously without the trees!) ? White/silver planting looks smart during the day, but just glows in the evening & in artificial light so ideal at the doorway. More colourful planting would compete with the door, keeping the palette restrained would, instead, complement it.
