More weeds than grass!

We seeded a very large area of our garden 4/5 weeks ago. Area was bare earth after removal of a lot of overgrown shrubs and as a result of burying a trampoline. We did a lot of preparation, bought new topsoil etc, and seeded according to guidelines. We have some areas that are growing really nicely but some that are far more weeds than grass. Do we try to weed or wait until we start mowing and hope that that kills them off? Advice online varies considerably. There are quite a lot of tiny, extremely stingy nettle type weeds which are horrible. Any advice appreciated......hope photo helps make sense of what I have described!

Not sure how you feel about using chemicals but you can get a weed killer specifically for lawns which kills the weeds & not the grass.

I think you should rather weed. in the same way that mowing cuts but doesn't kill grass, it cuts, but doesn't kill weeds. should you choose to mow, you will probably be left with sparse, short grass, and short weeds, until the next mowing. unfortunately, it's a time consuming job, but often worth it

Either option should be acceptable as you should rake the surface level and this process will turn any fertiliser into the soil. I would urge you to compact and firm any soil you apply as a topdressing in advance of seeding - this is something often forgotten and the consequences can be a lumpy or uneven finish in the future.

I think mine started from next door... Under here somewhere there is meant to be lavender and rosemary and a few other bits I've lost.. They've now completely cleared all of theirs, so now it just looks like the stuff from my side is trying to invade theirs! lol Coincidentally does anyone know what this is? It's somewhat spreading out and taking over the entire area of grass we have at the front of the house! almost vine like spreading out..

I think with such a small garden I would create a patio courtyard garden rather than a lawn. Tiny lawns are rarely successful, especially when you have a dog. I got rid of my lawn as the dogs had turned it into a pee ridden mess! I laid Indian sandstone instead. Plus points are your fencing looks great as does your shed. I would remove the washing line and get a retractable one, so you can pull out when in use and it pops back into its casing when not in use. So much tidier! Im thinking extend the patio, but leave borders of 1 metre all around for planting. If you don’t do this it has too much of a car park look. You won’t need raised beds unless you particularly want them. I can suggest plants if you wish. Here’s some ideas, the first pic is some of my garden.

It would make a fabulous flower border, but it depends how much maintenance you are happy to do. If you fill a border completely so no soil shows, this will help keep weeds down. To get rid of the weeds you could dig it over with a garden fork, removing the weeds as you go. A lot of people now use weed flame guns which burn the weeds. Another option is weedkiller but it is horrendous stuff that kills all nature’s mini beasts as well as the weeds so best as a last resort. I’ll be honest you won’t ever kill all the weeds, it’s an ongoing issue. A lot of weeds, like dandelions, air born so they fly in the air and land on soil and then grow. Turf is an option if you don’t mind cutting it each week. Weeds will grow through turf so you still need to remove the weeds before turfing. My last idea is to sow a flower meadow. You can sow seeds or buy meadow turf on a roll and lay that.
